What you will do

The Regional EHS Director is responsible for managing and optimizing the safety operations of multi-site facilities and will have a demonstrated knowledge of applicable environmental, health and safety regulations and demonstrated success in managing multi-site manufacturing and distribution locations in North America. You will serve as a change agent to implement across North America to achieve our vision of Zero Harm. This position will support the Johnson Controls (JCI) facilities across our Air Distribution footprint.

The position will work 60% remotely and 40% in plants. Applicants must be located in OR located in our headquarters in Plano, TX

How you will do it

  • Responsible to drive EHS systems and programs across 20+ manufacturing facilities Globally.   

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to environmental, health and safety, representing the company in all contact with regulatory agencies.

  • Plan, implement and manage safety/environmental policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations.

  • Plan, implement and manage programs to train managers and employees in work site safety practices, for example, but not limited to fire prevention, lockout/tagout, fall protection and correct handling techniques for chemicals, toxins, equipment, and other materials.

  • Lead, analyze and report on all incident and accidents in a timely manner. Build a thorough understanding of root causes and corrective actions and ensure communication and accountability throughout the organization.

  • Regularly perform GEMBA, coaching and safety walks in assigned facilities to drive safety culture and improvements.

  • Compile and submit accident and/or environmental reports required by corporation and regulatory agencies.

  • Participate in safety/environmental audits at throughout the year.  Lead risk assessment updates and audits within Region.

  • Review and comment on site Environmental operating permits (Air, Water, Waste).

  • Prepare, collate EHS data, input, update and maintain records as required.

  • Ensure timely submittal, acquisition and maintenance of all environmental permits and reports to maintain compliance with state and federal requirements; Review and comment on site Environmental operating permits (Air, Water, Waste).

  • Be a change agent, regularly driving improvement in environmental and safety performance and sustainability. Ensure improvement strategies are implemented, tracked and reported on in accordance with corporate KPIs.

  • Ensure compliance to and continued certification with ISO 14001 / ISO 45001 and OSHAS 18001 or actively pursue gaining certification to these management system standards if applicable. Drive zero landfill where appropriate.

  • Achieve the EHS KPIs set for region pertaining to Occupational Health and Safety programs and Sustainability programs and drive proactive Significant Incident and Fatality Prevention (SIF) programs across the region.

  • Lead the development of Standard Operating Procedures to include relevant safety precautions.

  • Update Management on changes to national or international EHS procedures and policies and ensure compliance.

  • Serve as EHS Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Johnson Controls Manufacturing System (JCMS) and corporate policies.

What we look for

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Management, Environmental Sciences, Safety or a related field.

  •  Minimum of ten (10) years of progressive EHS leadership experience in manufacturing environments with demonstrated knowledge of applicable environmental, health and safety regulations. 

  • Minimum of five (5) of experience managing EHS teams across multiple sites.

  • Successful EHS management experience over multiple sites.

  • Experience with OSHA and EPA and a strong background with regulatory agency interaction and engagement.

  • Must possess leadership, presenting and training skills, organization and planning abilities. 

  • Proficiency using Microsoft Suite Applications (Word, Excel, Access, TEAMS and PowerPoint) as well as

  • Proficiency using ProcessMAP EHS software.

  • Travel up to 40% required.

  • Must have strong analytical skills to determine root cause analysis and resolve operational failures and set corrective action/course.

  • Ability to work as both an individual contributor and as a facilitator for work teams and be able to provide hands-on training and coaching of others as an important component of the job.

  • Must have demonstrated success in managing systems and processes, action oriented and demonstrate energy for things seen as challenging.

Preferred

  • EHS certification preferred (ASP, CSP, PE and/or CHMM).

  • Experience in Lean Six Sigma methodology.
