The Role and the Company
We’re Heidelberg Materials. Our products build cities and towns, including stadiums that hold thousands of fans, and bridges that support millions of vehicles. We have nearly 9,000 employees across 450 locations in the U.S. and Canada, making us North America’s leading supplier of cement, aggregates, ready-mixed concrete, asphalt, and related construction materials.
As a member of a new style of team, you will be “the first of your kind” to work in a highly collaborative and high-empowerment set-up to deliver a value-centric digital solution alongside our industry software partners. This role reports directly to a new-to-hire Digital Manager who will follow leadership principles to foster an environment that maximizes your strengths and promotes collaboration, adaptability, and continuous improvement. The digital solution you will work on is in the domain of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and automating the data used to produce them from taking months to minutes to benefit our customers in the construction industry.
EPDs are emerging as a universal, credible tool driving environmental transparency in the construction sector. You and your teammates will be expected to deliver value across three areas of this digital solution (1) EPD standards and requirements gathering and capturing (2) data identification and collection including embedding the processes to standardize, collect, and automate the data and enabling our systems and business to follow the standard (3) data availability including testing and quality assurance for API endpoints to be consumed successfully by our industry software partners. The scope will also span our three core product lines of cement, aggregates, and ready-mix concrete.
This team will evolve to lead the next phases of the EPD Automation product as business need and market demand start to accelerate. This role will also be part of our succession plan to build more digital solutions within Heidelberg Materials either in the quality and sustainability space and/or other key areas for the digital strategy on the horizon in future years to come (e.g., logistics, automation, etc.)
What You'll Get to Do
- Join a team that works productively using agile software development processes, rituals, and disciplines as they work through tasks on their backlog, including business analysis, design, development, testing, and technical and business process documentation.
- Participate in time-boxed orientation sprints typically lasting 1-2 weeks and join in sprint planning meetings, sprint reviews, and sprint retrospectives to make continuous improvements to your team‘s ways of working. The team may also use various tools and practices to support their work, such as Jira for tracking progress, Confluence for documentation, and Kanban boards for visualizing workflow. The goal is to maintain a sustainable pace of work, adapt to changes quickly, and deliver incremental value to stakeholders regularly.
- Participate and collaborate closely with software partners in our industry and Regional Operations teams to standardize our business processes both procedurally inside the operations and technically within our landscape, so software partners can consume the data at a high level of quality, speed, and satisfaction for the next phase of the EPD automation product.
- Responsible for collecting relevant data and information for the LCA analysis and build automated data sourcing from systems and industry averages where applicable, automated data labeling of validity with confidence levels within defined thresholds, design trigger requests for manual data entry from specific data sources, determine manual data entry requirements and processes, define and ensure data storage strategy for ongoing use, replication, and maintenance
- Plan, coordinate, and ensure all activities related to the integration of disparate data and systems into the team’s end goals and structures.
- Review, analyze, and report on the effectiveness and efficiency of existing systems and develop testing strategies for improving or leveraging these systems as a part of the solution.
- Develop and implement databases, data collection systems, data analytics and other strategies that optimize statistical efficiency and quality.
- More details will come as the team forms, and they get to benchmark how other countries within Heidelberg Materials have done similar work in the EPD space; so having a learning and listening attitude and approach will also be a key to success
