Lead Resident Assistant

FUNCTION: Provides Activities of daily Living (ADL) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) services to residents in accordance with the Individual Service Plan (ISP). Supervise or assist residents with personal care services, which include self administered medication management, activities of daily living (ADL’s) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL’s) as identified in the ISP and assigned by the Nurse and in compliance with the state statutes. Supervision includes reminding and/or observing residents while they perform activities. Assistance includes either physical assistance or standby supervision. Provides support to new resident assistants. May provide some laundry and housekeeping tasks. May act as shift leader as established by community standards.
POSITION SPECIFICATIONS:
• The following specifications may differ depending upon the number of available employees among whom the performance of a particular job function can be distributed and the size and type of community.
• Employees will be required to perform any other job related duties requested by their supervisor.
• Requirements are representative of minimum levels of knowledge, skills and/or abilities. To perform this job successfully, incumbent will possess the mental abilities or aptitudes to perform each duty proficiently.

QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
Minimum Qualifications: Must demonstrate competency in the following areas:
• Read, write, speak and understand the English language.
• Freedom from illegal use of drugs.
• Freedom from use and effects of use of drugs and alcohol in the workplace.
• Persons who have been found guilty by a court of law of abusing, neglecting, or mistreating individuals in a health care related setting are ineligible for employment in the position.
• Demonstrates effective time management skills.
• Must be 18 years of age
Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED), or three (3) months related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and caregiver experience desired. Must have completed, or be enrolled in, specific medication training required by individual state statutes. Successfully completed other state-required education / certification classes.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
• Must have valid, unrestricted certification in the state (CNA desired) and maintain CEU’s as required by the State.
• CPR and First Aid certification or successfully achieved within 30 days of employment.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written oral, diagram or schedule form.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each key function satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the key functions.
Resident Care and Services
• Assisting with the training of new employees to ensure they are educated on our procedures and policies.
• Supervision and performance monitoring of team members in Assisted Living, and the application of department services to residents in the community.
• Prompt notification to ED, H&W Director, or Wellness Nurse of all emergencies and situations beyond the scope of your capabilities.
• Participation in resident orientation, and identification of potential changes or concerns within the care plan of each resident.
• Participate in required training, meetings and orientations offered by employer. • Assist resident with all personal care skills (bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting) and services in accordance with Individual Resident Service Plan, using safe, courteous and effective standards of practice.
• Makes appropriate observations about resident’s condition in event interaction with resident and records changes in resident’s condition in a timely manner or reports changes to the H &W Director, Nurse or designated charge person immediately.
• Provide assistance to residents who self-administer medications consistent with State Regulations and as individualized on the resident service plan.
• Records omission of resident services/medications according to company policy/procedures and standards.
. • Assist or provide bath and dress residents as needed.
• Assist or provide with grooming needs such as hair care, mouth care, nail care and foot care.
• Transport residents and assist with walking.
• Escort residents to meals and/or activities.
• Transfer and or transport residents when necessary.
• Assist with toileting or incontinent care.
• Change bed linens and make beds.
• Assists in recording temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration rates, and food and fluid intake and output, as directed.
• Aid in the delivery of specific participation in programs, such as fall prevention, safety, rehab and wellness, exercise and others as identified, which will provide entertainment, socialization to all residents.
• Participate in family conferences as needed to discuss the resident’s status and review the appropriate service plan, medication regimen.
• Report any concerns or changes in residents’ physical, intellectual, or emotion well-being to the designated charge person or nurse.
• Adhere to all community standards of resident rights and more specifically to the state and federal standards for resident rights.
• Supervise or assist with dining services, meal assistance/adaptive equipment and snacks.
• Escort residents to meals and/or activities.
• Supervise, assist or transfer residents when necessary.
• Comply with all company policies and procedures in regard to resident rights; abuse prevention and reporting; and resident confidentiality (HIPPA).
• Foster and maintains effective working relationships between peers, professional staff and other personnel within the community.
• Supervise or assist with IADL’s including meal preparation, light housekeeping, laundering of personal clothing and telephoning.
• Supervise or assist with the use of transportation.
• Supervise or assist with activity programs.
• Promptly respond to resident emergency call lights.
• May function as shift lead, in absence of H & W Director or H & W Assistant Director, maintaining awareness of overall building/resident well being and following “on call” protocols.
• Comply with all documentation policies/procedures including incident reports, log notes chart at appropriate. • Gets report from Nurse or designated person at the beginning end of the shift.
• Provide support for other designated areas/units as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Customer Service
• Treat all residents in a kind, gentle, friendly and professional manner. Always respecting resident’s dignity and privacy.
• Demonstrate a courteous, polite, and friendly attitude with families, visitors and co-workers.
• Respond in a timely manner to the needs of residents, families and visitors.
Safety
• Adhere to all community safety policies and procedure including infection prevention/hygiene, fire safety, disaster preparedness and proper body mechanics.
• Demonstrates knowledge and complies with policies and procedures related to maintaining the cleanliness of the community common areas and apartments.
• Demonstrates knowledge and complies with policy and procedure on filing out the DCEC/Unusual Occurrence Report and the Employee Incident Report.
Performance Requirements
• Perform all duties according to policy and in a professional manner.
• Comply with community attendance and punctuality policies.
• Comply with community personal appearance standards/policies.
• Attend scheduled staff meetings and/or in-service programs and applies knowledge and information received through those sessions to future work.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Risk Management Responsibilities
• Is knowledgeable of and complies with all company policies/procedures related to hygiene/sanitation standards, i.e., hand washing.
• Is knowledgeable of and complies with company policies/procedures related to maintaining the cleanliness of all retirement community common areas and apartments.
• Is knowledgeable of and complies with company policy/procedure on filing out the DCEC/Unusual Occurrence Report and the Employee Incident Report.
• Is knowledgeable of and complies with state regulations as they apply to the retirement community and this job description.
• Have current CPR and First Aid Certification.
Resident Rights:
• Promotes and protects residents’ rights, assists residents to make informed decisions, treats Residents with dignity and respect, protects residents’ personal belongings.
• Demonstrates understanding of the resident’s right of choice by encouraging resident to make decisions in all ADLs and asking resident about preference in providing daily service.
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Demonstrates active listening techniques, gains support through effective relationships, treats others with dignity and respect and seeks feedback. Demonstrates a positive attitude within all departments by addressing coworker issues in a timely manner and with tact.
CONTINUING EDUCATION: Attend staff meetings, in-services and continuing education programs as required to maintain certification or licensure and/or meet state regulations. Applies information gained through those meetings in future work practices.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Exposure Risk: Is subject to potential exposure to infectious waste, disease, conditions, etc., including but not limited to, TB, HIV and Hepatitis B.
