The Surgical Unit provides nursing care for patients undergoing a wide range of general and complex surgical procedures pre and post-operatively. Including but not limited to trauma surgeries, gastrointestinal, urology, bariatric, orthopedic, joint replacements, and ENT surgeries. Our patient population also includes patients hospitalized for general medical needs and illnesses spanning multiple organ systems and diagnoses. The Registered Nurse (RN) is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility and accountability for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care of patients. The staff RN utilizes the nursing process by use of technology, therapeutic intervention, evidence-based practice and coordination of care with other health team members.

Patient Assessment:   Patient population includes patients hospitalized for general medical needs and illnesses spanning multiple organ systems and diagnoses. We also care for patients that require intermediate care beds .
Care Planning:   The comradery among the staff is outstanding with close communication with APP’s , Doctors, and Surgeons.
Implementation of Care:   Utilize the nursing process, technology, and evidence-based practices to provide therapeutic interventions.
Documentation:  We use Epic
Continuing Education:   Educational opportunities monthly with surgeons and neurologists to help further understand reasons for surgeries and management of specific diagnosis.

Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing is required .

A Registered Nurse with an ASN/ADN degree must complete a BSN degree within four (4) years from the Registered Nurse’s date of hire unless the Registered Nurse has a minimum of fifteen (15) years of proven continuous Registered Nurse experience in an acute care setting. Joseph, or Lutheran Medical Centers as of September 1, 2014 with only an ASN/ADN will be exempt from this requirement. Mary’s, Home Health, and TSFP as of December 31, 2017 with only an ASN/ADN will be exempt from this requirement.

Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS-HCP) certification upon hire or obtained within 60 days of hire with prior approval. (ACLS/NRP/PALS as appropriate for unit or service.)
Strong communication skills for interacting with patients and healthcare providers, particularly in emergency situations.
Manual dexterity for handling delicate equipment and frequent computer use for documentation.
Capacity to lift and move patients and equipment, with the ability to navigate busy environments and stand for extended periods.


Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.- and -Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.- and -Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.- Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. and -Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc).- Marys Regional Hospital
