POSITION OBJECTIVE:       Develop and lead the implementation of strategies, policies, and programs across the human resource function. Provide guidance to executive leadership and supervision of HR personnel to ensure legal compliance and alignment of HR functions with the company’s goals.

REPORTS TO:                       General Counsel & Secretary

LOCATION:                           Washington, DC; eligible to earn telework 2 days/week

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with executive leadership in the development of strategies to support employee engagement, recruitment, and retention of valued employees.
  • Develop, coordinate, and implement policies, processes, training, and other initiatives to support the organization’s HR compliance and strategy.
  • Administer or oversee the administration of all HR functions, including recruitment and retention, training and development, compensation and benefits, employee leave, performance management, disputes and investigations, and disciplinary matters.
  • Train, coach, supervise, and evaluate HR Generalists, ensuring coordination, communication, and clear roles and responsibilities across the team.
  • Guide and direct the maintenance and enhancement of employee benefit programs. Serve a fiduciary role as a member of the organization’s Benefits Administration Committee and supervise the day-to-day administration of employee benefit plans.
  • Prepare or oversee the preparation of government reports on employment and benefits and coordinate with relevant advisors, record keepers, actuaries and auditors.
  • Develop and manage compensation structure and monitor market comparisons through compensation surveys and other relevant data.
  • Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, employment laws, and new technologies to ensure the organization maintains sound HR practices and legal compliance.
  • Counsel managers in matters such as staffing structure, recruiting, setting clear expectations, timely feedback and coaching, resolving internal conflict, and disciplinary action.
  • Provide briefings and other communications to support employee understanding of employment policies, employee benefits, and other areas of interest.
  • Coordinate with outside vendors including advisors, record keepers, actuaries and auditors regarding the maintenance and review of company retirement plans.
  • Oversee the maintenance of employment records.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Communicates regularly with employees at all levels of the organization. Manages relationships with multiple vendors that support the HR function.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Human Resources or related field
  • Current or previous Human Resources professional certification

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • At least ten years of progressively responsible experience in HR, with at least five years of management experience
  • Highest level of professionalism, integrity, and discretion
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent time management and project management skills
  • Strong supervisory skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Proficiency with ADP and familiarity with other talent management systems

PREFERRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • HR management experience with a mid-sized company (e.g. 50-300 employees)
  • Trade association or other nonprofit experience

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Occasional travel
