About the Role Uber is seeking sr staff level engineering candidates with a proven breadth and depth of experience to help take our storage systems to the next level. We use a mix of internally-developed systems (Schemaless, Docstore) and open-source software such as Cassandra and MySQL. We are embarking on a journey to modernize our database for its next generation and evaluating opportunities to introduce new systems and components that will take us to the next level in scalability, efficiency, availability, and ease of use. What the Candidate Will Do Provide technical leadership in architecting and building mission-critical distributed storage systems which underpin Uber’s global operations Collaborate with others, from talented team members within your group, through smart technologists across product lines, to responsible leaders across Uber. Deal with a difference in opinions in a mature and fair way, helping teams to commit and move forward Basic Qualifications Bachelor’s degree or higher in an engineering field (e.g. Computer Science, Computer Engineering, etc.). 12+ years of experience in building large scale distributed systems in a high caliber environment Experience in programming languages such as Java, Go or Python Experience in scalable storage and working with databases Deep expertise in systems engineering at scale in storage or related domains. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write detailed technical documents. Passionate about building systems that are both powerful and easy to use. Preferred Qualifications Experience building or operating NewSQL databases at scale, such as TiDB Deep experience building distributed systems at scale. For example, know the tradeoffs of different sharding and replication strategies; can reason about data consistency in a distributed environment; and know some consensus algorithms and/or at least tried studying Paxos Proven track record as reflected by attainment of Staff Engineer level or above on a premier tech company engineering ladder, or comparable achievement elsewhere. Experience working with open-source projects and ecosystem Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write detailed technical documents Track record of leading successful teams. You will be eligible to participate in Uber’s bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp. You will also be eligible for various benefits.
