Plumbing Assistant Supervisor, Dept. of Facility Maintenance (Downcounty) 8 hrs / 12 months – Ad Closes 11‑18‑25 Primary Location: Silver Spring Responsibilities Under general supervision, plumbing assistant supervisors oversee the plumbing needs of commercial food service gas equipment housed in MCPS facilities located within the region served by a Division of Maintenance and Operations service center. The work includes installation, ongoing maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, inspection, renovation, supply, disposal and other activities related to the utility systems for water, steam, or natural gas. Assistant supervisors take responsibility for the overall performance of the entire plumbing team and the activities of individual team members. In this working position, the plumbing assistant supervisor may need to perform the duties of a plumber I or II while helping to plan, schedule, organize, and coordinate the day‑to‑day operation and workflow of the service center’s plumbing team. The assistant supervisor assists with assigning plumbing service requests to the appropriate technician for completion, ensuring that work orders are processed and performed promptly, and maintaining relevant work order records as required. The assistant supervisor also helps with coordinating requests for parts and materials and assisting the service center managers in the administration and management of the mechanical maintenance program. Assistant supervisors are also responsible for recruiting, staffing, evaluating, developing, and recognizing technicians. Assistant supervisors implement and enforce systems, policies, and procedures while maintaining safe and healthy work environments. The assistant supervisor has a greater degree of involvement in the day‑to‑day assignment of work and supervision of work activities than the supervisors and a lesser level of involvement in policy, overall program planning, and customer communications. Physical Demands & Special Requirements Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises. Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required objects up to 50 pounds. Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment. Considerable knowledge of how to operate building mechanical equipment in an efficient manner. While the depth of the technical knowledge is comparable to a Level II technician in a single trade is ideal, it is not required because the breadth of mechanical systems knowledge is critical. Ability to effectively supervise shop and field maintenance activities, including the assignment of work and completion of accurate work orders. Ability to make accurate labor and cost estimates, maintain records and complete maintenance related reports. Ability to evaluate maintenance activities and employee performance and to make sound recommendations for the prompt, efficient, and effective maintenance of school facilities. Ability to oversee employee work standards and safety, compliance, building efficiency, and occupant health and comfort. Excellent oral and written communications and human relations skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the even core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS). Education, Training & Experience High School or GED diploma required. Successful completion of some coursework or trade school training in mechanical trades, safety, computer applications, facilities management, or supervision required. Considerable experience in building mechanical systems maintenance, construction and renovation, school equipment, and facilities maintenance, including lead or supervisory experience required. Comprehensive knowledge of procedures, techniques, materials, equipment, tools involved in a wide variety of installation, maintenance, and repair activities of all trades supervised. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.
