With top-tier security, intuitive controls, and an unparalleled experience, Vera puts you in charge.About the RoleWe are looking for an experienced Director of Credit risk to own, build, and scale our credit risk and targeting strategy from the ground up. This is a foundational, high-impact leadership role to manage risk and be the architect of the portfolio's growth. You will report directly to the Chief Risk Officer and serve as a key member of the leadership team. Responsible for building and mentoring your core team over the next two years as we enter an aggressive growth phase. If you thrive in ambiguous environments, excel at complex problem-solving, and possess a profound passion for utilizing data science to establish a sustainable business, reach out.In this role, you will:Architect the launch and ongoing growth through the development of best-in-class credit risk and marketing targeting strategies.Design, Deploy, and Evolve credit underwriting strategies across the entire customer lifecycle: acquisitions, limit assignment, line management, and collections.Drive experimental test design and implementation, statistical analysis to quickly scale new account growth through direct mail and digital channels.Refine our marketing spend and direct mail targeting strategy to manage Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC).Manage portfolio P&L KPIs and ensure strong risk-adjusted returns as the portfolio scales.Analyze market and industry trends to refine credit policy, manage the portfolio as we grow the business.Oversee the development and deployment of advanced machine learning models and adverse action reasons to ensure accuracy, fairness, and compliance of underwriting decisions.Partner with engineering and data teams to deploy resilient, automated policies.Ensure strong regulatory and governance standards are met, working closely with legal and compliance leads to build a strong risk culture.Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing team of credit risk analysts and managers as we build the team over the next 2 years.Deliver the agenda in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment using solid business judgment.What we are looking for:7+ years of experience in consumer lending, with direct, hands‑on experience in Credit Card Risk Management across near‑prime and prime segments. Proven experience designing, deploying, and managing complex credit underwriting strategies and advanced quantitative models (including machine learning). Expert proficiency in statistical software (e.g., Python, R, SAS) and a strong ability to translate complex data analysis into clear, strategic business actions. Bachelor's or Master's degree in a quantitative field (e.g., Economics, Finance, Statistics, Engineering); advanced degree a plus. Strategic thinker who can approach white space problems with innovative solutions. Strong analytical mindset with a passion for solving complex problems to drive a culture of data‑driven problem solving. Candidates who bring a blend of hands‑on execution and executive‑level strategic thinking, particularly within fast‑growing or early‑stage consumer lending environments, will thrive in this role. Familiarity with U.S. consumer credit regulations (FCRA, ECOA, Reg‑Z/TILA and UDAAP). The role will be in the Washington DC Metro area. Given the early‑stage nature, we expect the individual to be in office regularly and work in close collaboration with the rest of the founding team.
