Primary Responsibilities The primary duty of the Community Transportation Strategy Director is to grow HDR’s global Community Transportation Strategy practice, helping clients keep the communities they serve top of mind. The position partners with business leaders across the firm to coordinate activities tied to enterprise goals and expand HDR’s technical excellence in community‑focused solutions. Program Leadership The Director leads HDR’s Community Transportation Strategy practice, providing strategies, tools, and analyses for organization policies, project outcomes, community-informed decision‑making, compliance, and community benefits planning. The Director works with transportation leadership to advance the program through internal and external initiatives, maintain a database of HDR resources, track market trends, and develop annual strategic plans. Project and Program Support Responsibilities The Director serves as a technical focal point to deliver community‑centered solutions, supporting long‑term growth goals while maintaining high‑quality deliverables. Duties include technical support, quality oversight, audit participation, best‑practice development, project leadership, and principal‑level program/project management. Marketing and Business Development The Director supports all transportation market sector directors in developing community‑focused initiatives, helping secure major pursuit opportunities, and assisting with pre‑proposal discussions, proposal preparation, and negotiations. The Director also serves as a conduit between project and pursuit needs and HDR resources. Technical Staff Development and Alignment The Director is the subject‑matter expert in community‑centered decision‑making, leading initiatives and best practices. The Director develops an HDR educational program, coordinates mentorship opportunities, and develops staff retention strategies for community‑focused work. Location & Travel Position is non‑specific; requires a location where HDR has an established presence. Minimum of 30% annual travel. Utilization At least 50% utilization on billable project work, maximizing expertise in client management, project principal, quality review, or task lead on large or complicated projects. Preferred Qualifications A Bachelor's degree in urban, city, or regional planning, engineering, economics, marketing, communications, public relations, sustainability, or other related field; 15 years of practical experience in the Architecture & Engineering industry; Experience in development and management of a wide range of client relationships and specific programs and/or project pursuits; Demonstrated industry leadership in associations and a visible profile in the relevant markets; Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with client managers, technical practice directors, market sector directors, and operations staff; Proven experience recruiting and leading staff; strong history of mentoring; and Demonstrated commitment to HDR values and an active participation in our employee‑owned culture; An understanding of HDR’s Business Classes, Cross Sectors, Market Sectors, and Business Groups, and demonstrated relationships with Area Management teams; An understanding of HDR’s ID&E initiatives and corporate responsibility report process; Master’s degree in a related field preferred. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in a Professional, Architecture, Engineering or closely related field; A minimum of 10 years of experience in related field; Maintains a professional or Engineering registration and has related technical experience; Experienced in development and management of diverse teams; Works cooperatively with other business class directors, operations managers, technical directors and marketing managers; Committed to quality, improvement and HDR values; Active participation as an employee‑owner is required.
