Job Purpose:

The Pre-Admission RN is responsible for ensuring that all patients are properly prepared for surgery according to the patient's needs, anesthesia requirements, and surgeon's protocols. The Pre-Admission RN is also responsible for coordinating patient care and acting as liaison between the patient, clinic, and surgery center, ensuring that all testing requirements are met the patient is receiving the highest level of care in the perioperative setting. This role involves explaining pre-operative procedures, answering patient questions, and preparing patients for a successful surgical experience.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

• Works closely with the Ambulatory Surgery Center to ensure patients are reached prior to surgery while preventing cancellations due to preadmission screening while assessing the surgery schedule and prioritizes workload by identifying which patients need to have the interview/testing process completed first.

• Collects and documents patient information, including physical, emotional, psychosocial, and environmental needs into the patient medical record including required testing based on patient's health history, medications, and protocols outlined by anesthesia, physicians, and Ambulatory Surgery Center surgical guidelines.

• Reviews History & Physical to determine if all necessary components are present, acceptable for surgery, and/or if anesthesia needs to be notified.

• Determines, reviews, documents and coordinates testing with patients' surgeon and primary care physician to ensure compliance with established protocols and procedures including communicating any variance to anesthesia providers and the Ambulatory Surgery Center surgery team.

• Collects, documents, communicates and educates patients on medications, pre-operation instructions, and answers patient questions.

• Coordinates medication discontinuation with specialty providers.

• Notifies anesthesia department of any required anesthesia reviews.

• Communicates with the Ambulatory Surgery Center surgery team on any issues or updates.

• Assists the patient in identifying a care giver to assist in the post-operative recovery phase.

Education and Experience Requirements:

• Associate's degree or equivalent in Nursing from a two-year college or technical school

• A minimum of two years of experience in a similar position and/or performing similar tasks, ASC experience a plus

• Current and unrestricted RN license for the state you will be practicing in (IL or WI)

• BLS certification

• Basic working knowledge of Microsoft and Google suites

• Expert working knowledge of EMR systems

Environmental/Working Conditions:

Working environment is an office/ambulatory surgery center. Occasional work hours outside of normal business hours, including evenings and weekends.

Physical/Mental Demands:

• Sit, stand, walk for extended periods of time

• Requires lifting, carrying and/or moving objects in a manner consistent with most office environments (generally, no more than 10 pounds on a frequent basis and 20 pounds on an occasional basis)

• Possess full range of motion in shoulders and arms, including reaching above or below the shoulder

• Finger dexterity for typing on a keyboard and using a mouse for extended periods of time; ability to twist hands or wrists repetitively

• Good balance

• Vision (e.g., depth perception, color vision, strong vision up close); hearing (e.g., high pitch sounds, soft or distant sounds)
