Summary The Forensic Laboratory Technician will assist with the daily functions of the Medical Examiner’s office, including preparing work materials, solutions, reagents, test sample preparation, laboratory instrument maintenance and operation, and quality control examinations for critical reagents. The position may handle, prepare, and perform analytical tests on forensic evidence and may be required to testify in court. The Technician must comply with court orders, standard operating procedures, state laws, statutes, and accreditation requirements of NAME, ANAB, and the Texas Forensic Science Commission. The role supports the Medical Examiner’s Office, the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney’s Office, other district or county attorney’s offices within and outside the district, law enforcement agencies, defense attorneys, and court personnel. Essential Duties And Responsibilities Assist laboratory personnel with daily duties including preparing work materials, solutions, reagents, test sample preparation, and routine instrument maintenance. Independently perform analytical testing and prepare evidence for case submission under regulatory standards, maintaining full chain of custody. Coordinate and document chain of custody for evidence during intake, analysis, and release, directly supporting courtroom admissibility. Lead decontamination protocols and certify readiness of lab areas and instruments for testing. Maintain inventory and restock consumable supplies and chemicals at laboratory workstations. Retrieve laboratory deliveries and distribute contents as appropriate. Prepare specimens for send-out to non-routine laboratory reference lab testing with proper requisition paperwork. Adhere to and participate in the quality management program, policies, and safety standards required by accrediting bodies and regulatory agencies. This includes proper use of personal protective equipment and universal precautions for exposure to biological fluids and hazardous chemicals. Utilize the laboratory information management system (LIMS), document management system software, and laboratory-specific software to assist laboratory personnel with daily duties. Process and package biohazard and hazardous chemical waste produced in the laboratory for proper pick-up and disposal in accordance with state law. Field laboratory-specific phone calls to provide adequate customer service. Work with instrument vendors to schedule service and/or preventative maintenance on all instrumentation. Troubleshoot instrument anomalies and alert lab management of QC concerns; propose corrective actions aligned with ANAB/NAME standards. Serve as contact for lab vendors and provide recommendations on instrument maintenance and performance optimization. Perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Excellent customer service and communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Must be able to stay organized and prioritize workload. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Competency with computers and Microsoft Office 365 Suite. Knowledge of basic laboratory skills including proper donning of personal protective equipment, following standard operating procedures, measuring solids and liquids, pipetting, and record keeping. Minimum Requirements Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or forensic science field. One full-time year of laboratory work experience. Texas Forensic Science Commission Forensic Technician License or Provisional Technician License in the job-specific category required within six months of hire.
