The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, together with the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, seeks a full-time non-tenure-eligible Team Scientist at the rank Assistant Professor or Associate Professor to serve as the Director of its Disability Ethics program.

The SRALab Disability Ethics program is a unique and impactful program that is heavily involved in not only providing consultation on patient care issues, but also education to faculty, medical trainees, and hospital staff. Their focus is on the special ethical issues that apply to people with disabilities and the professionals who care for them. In addition to developing curriculum and learning materials, the person will be expected to teach medical students, residents, fellows, allied health professionals, and people with disabilities and their families. Further, the ethics professional will be expected to generate papers for publications, participate in or lead research projects, and collaborate with other members of the Department faculty.

Another important expectation will be collaborating with the medical bioethics program of the Medical School. This position is for an individual to serve as Director of the SRALab Disability Ethics program, who will provide leadership in defining the vision and priorities of the program, lead a clinical and research ethics consultation service, ensuring quality and meeting standards, oversee Ethics consultation staff, identify and lead new educational and grant opportunities, and work with fellow institutional staff members and leaders to ensure implementation of appropriate ethical standards throughout the institution.

Qualified candidates will have:

  1. Doctorate or terminal degree in science, law or medicine-related field with specialization in medical ethics required. MD, JD or Ph.D. preferred.
  2. Eight to ten years of experience working in the field of clinical medical ethics required with completion of a clinical ethics fellowship and/or post graduate training in ethics consultation.
  3. Healthcare Ethics Consultation Certification (HEC-C) required.
  4. A minimum of 8-10 years of experience as a clinical ethicist engaged in ethics consultations or a demonstrated record of involvement in over 500 ethics consultations required (training in fellowship not included).
  5. Clinical ethics experience in a disability-related field, rehabilitation or in an active and diverse (including areas beyond acute care) clinical ethics setting required. Experience in clinical ethics with both adult and pediatric populations required.
  6. A minimum of 5-7 years of experience on a research ethics consultation service required.
  7. Research ethics consultation experience in a translational hospital setting preferred.
  8. A minimum of 5-7 years of experience serving on a Hospital Ethics Committee; demonstrated expertise in policy development and leading organizational ethics initiatives required.
  9. Demonstrated ability to teach ethics in an academic or applied setting. Ability to manage and effectively create and deliver high-quality educational programming. Experience with teaching disability ethics and translational/research ethics preferred.
  10. Demonstrated track record of scholarly contributions in disability ethics, including academic publications and conference presentations.
  11. Administrative experience required, including managerial experience in leading staff and ethics committee initiatives.
  12. Advanced experience in conflict resolution and mediation in a clinical ethics setting is expected.
  13. Advanced organizational skills to efficiently prioritize and complete a variety of tasks; experience with leadership and mentorship of staff is required.
  14. Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively and lead in a team setting in order to maximize quality and efficiency of operations.
  15. Excellent communications and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients, families, professionals, academics, and other people with an interest in disability ethics.

The start date is negotiable and the position will remain open until filled.

This position involves employment at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and a faculty appointment at NU.
