Stroke Program Director/Educator - Eastern Long Island Hospital The Stroke Program, Director/Educator Stroke Program Director is responsible for overseeing and managing the patient care for all patients with stroke (or stroke related diagnosis), including acute stroke, and post-stroke care. This leadership role focuses on ensuring quality, safety, and appropriate patient care for these patients, while also managing resources and staff development. The director collaborates with other healthcare professionals to implement and evaluate patient care practices, ensuring adherence to regulatory standards and contributing to the hospital's overall goals. This position supports the Stroke team and maintains a strong component of patient/family advocacy with day-to-day review and coordination of multidisciplinary service. This position is also responsible for providing education and evaluation to nursing and patient care staff and facilitates evidence-based research within a specialized area of nursing. Job Duties & Essential Functions Oversight of the interdisciplinary care for acute ischemic stroke, TIA, non-traumatic ICH and SAH patients. Provide real time feedback and assist Education and Practice Development with education for Clinical staff, maintaining the stroke inpatient list, and assist in performing chart reviews to ensure medical record documentation for all acute stroke patients is reliable and up to date for all quality process and outcome monitoring. Provides direction and oversight for stroke-related nursing care, aligning with hospital goals and objectives. Collaborate with the Stroke Coordinator pertaining to IT requests for updates to the progress notes or order sets related to stroke care and management and required data collection. Coordinate and assist facilitation of monthly SBSH Stroke Support Group Meetings. Ensures high-quality, safe, and appropriate nursing care for stroke patients, including acute and post-stroke care. Collaborates with Nursing Leadership and members of the Stroke Team to provide evidence-based education to staff for SBELIH as a Primary Stroke Center. Supports the development and training of nursing staff, ensuring competency and adherence to best practices. Acts as a key resource in the orientation and the continuing education nursing personnel and patient care services personnel as indicated or requested. Initiates skills development programs within the parameters of established care models; monitors trends and implements educational strategies to ensure compliance with quality standards and parameters. Collaborates with medical providers, patient care staff, and unit management in the planning, implementation, and delivery of educational curricula. Educates technical and patient care staff in the use of new equipment, supplies, and instruments; coordinates in-service training and workshops for appropriate staff. Manages resources efficiently to optimize patient care and maintain budget adherence. Works collaboratively with other healthcare professionals, including physicians, therapists, and social workers, to provide comprehensive stroke care. Fosters a culture of accountability, evidence-based practice, and interprofessional teamwork. May be involved in community education programs to raise awareness about stroke prevention and care. Provides educational leadership to patients and care providers to enhance specialized patient care within established healthcare setting. Provides direct specialized nursing services to an assigned group of patients, providing specialized patient care within nursing protocols and assisting in the performance of all related nursing duties. Develops patient care plans, incorporating evidence-based research and national standards; consults with and serves as a resource to ensure quality patient care. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices. Performs other job-related duties as assigned. Required Experience & Qualifications Bachelor's of Science graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. Current License to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State. At least three (3) years of relevant nursing experience in emergency and/or critical care setting. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification American Heart Association. Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification American Heart Association. Preferred Experience & Qualifications Master of Science in Nursing or Nursing Education. Five (5) or more years relevant clinical nursing experience in an acute care setting. Three (3) or more years of experience with orientation and education of nursing staff in a clinical setting. Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification American Heart Association. Physical Demands Ability to stand, walk, and move quickly for extended periods, especially during emergencies. Ability to assist with patient transfers, repositioning and physical interventions, if needed. Lifting and/or transferring patients, including those who may be physically aggressive or uncooperative, with the use of appropriate safety techniques and equipment. Handling equipment and supplies needed for emergency care. Reacting quickly to situations involving physical restraint, patient agitation, or aggression. Providing physical support in restraining or de-escalating patients if necessary. Ability to use medical instruments, perform assessments, administer medications, and manage equipment with precision. Performing tasks such as documenting patient information, administering injections, or manipulating medical equipment. Ability to maintain physical and mental alertness during long shifts, including night shifts and weekends. Capacity to manage high-stress situations with clear decision-making and physical capacity. Ability to manage the emotional and physical challenges that come with caring for patients who may be agitated or experiencing mental health crises. Must be able to respond quickly and take rapid action including using physical restraint procedures to stabilize patient in a crisis situation. These physical demands are tailored to the nature of the job, which requires a high level of alertness, physical engagement, and responsiveness, especially when dealing with patients in acute psychiatric distress.
