Overview The Groundman position is your first step to a rewarding career in the construction and maintenance of our nation’s Power Grid. You will assist your team in building, repairing, and maintaining overhead electrical distribution systems. Job Duties Support your team by securing safety of yourself and others. They include standing, walking, using hands, reaching with arms, performing rigorous physical labor, climbing structures, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting or moving up to or in excess of 50 lbs. Vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Work Environment Team members may be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, mechanical parts, vibration, and extreme conditions. Noise level can be loud. Work is performed outside and is subject to diverse weather conditions. General Expectations Obtain a Commercial Driver’s License permit within 60 days. Read/write and communicate effectively. Travel long distances on short notice when required. Work extended periods in varied locations when required. Lift in excess of 50 lbs. Work overtime when requested. Work outside normal schedule including weekends, holidays, and required overtime. Functions to Be Expected in Overhead Powerline Construction Perform safe work during new construction, maintenance, or repair of energized and de‑energized overhead power lines. Inspect rubber goods and personal protective equipment (PPE) properly. Determine when to wear PPE. String overhead wire. Set poles and anchors. Assist with installing transformers, lightning arresters, cut‑outs, cross‑arms, insulators, switches, and switchgear. Assist in replacing fuses in transformers and clearing faulted circuits. Work with energized high‑voltage systems with skill and care to protect lives. Maintain company vehicles, equipment, and tools in good working order. Perform rigorous physical labor. Use company radio properly. Understand basic rigging, hand lines, and lineman knot tying. Maintain hand tools properly. Follow directions and instructions. Know basic materials used in line work. Identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit. Understand induced voltage. Assist with installation and hookup of a single‑phase transformer. Perform basic bucket rescue/escape. Understand basic concepts of equipment set‑up and grounding. Work at heights and/or confined spaces. Understand minimum approach distance. Understand excavation and shoring requirements. Check voltage on transformers. Install and remove service equipment. Climb different types of structures (wood, steel, etc.) with necessary tools. Use Kellum grips appropriately. Identify different types of materials used in line work. Work outdoors frequently in inclement weather. Perform all related work as required to complete the job.
