Chief Financial Officer

JOB SUMMARY:
The Chief Financial Officer ("CFO") will assume responsibility for leadership and management of all financial operations, functions, and strategy for the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (“CNHA”). This position will be primary accountable for serving as a key advisor to the Chief Executive Officer (“CEO”) ensuring financial risk is mitigated in advance regarding appropriate forecasting and recommendations. In addition, this position will be responsible for proper management over all internal/external accounting controls/processes, accurate and timely processing of day-to-day accounting operations, analysis of program financial condition and financial reports, creating and maintaining company/program budgets, and driving the development of financial strategies and systems that promote financial stability.
DUTIES, RESPONSIBIITIES, and EXPECTATIONS:
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Ensure Program Managers and their staff comply with applicable accounting, budgeting, auditing and reporting requirements, standards and principles; and have resources necessary to complete assignments.
- Applies flexibility that responds to the changing timelines, product and service needs of the organization, clients, members and community, with a willingness to learn new methods and technologies.
- Oversees, maintains, and provides on-going financial reporting (e.g., monthly, quarterly, annually) to the CEO regularly.
- Oversees the work of third-party auditors, consultants and employees preparing and/or filing reports, annual audits, and tax or informational returns (if applicable).
- Interprets and delivers complex data and information, providing recommendations directly to the CEO and Board (as requested), regarding CNHA’s budget, investments, finances, and all related policies and procedures.
- Develops and implements accounting and financial reporting systems.
- Overall accounting of CNHA subsidiaries or divisions.
- Day-to-day accounting operations, from data entry to financial reporting.
- Monitoring and analysis of program financial condition and financial reports.
- Development and implementation of financial policies.
- Provides oversight and leadership to accounting staff.
- Accountable for ensuring that all areas of finance that are under review or governed by federal and regulatory oversight are fully compliant, therefore ensuring the effectiveness of all regulatory compliance and programs are implemented and refreshed.
- Demonstrates a strong work ethic, high degree of professionalism, and positive attitude and approach to complex challenges.
- Provides strategic analyses to the CEO and organization on issues and trends in the business, economic, and fiscal environment in which CNHA is operating; and proactively recommends appropriate strategies and actions to ensure strategic and tactical alignment and fiscal sustainability.
- Performs excellent time management and project management skills, demonstrating accountability and reliability by consistently performing tasks and responsibilities timely and within deadlines.
- Participates and performs duties as assigned for CNHA’s annual Native Hawaiian Convention.
- Maintains the privacy and confidentiality of information, protecting the assets of the CNHA, acting with ethics and integrity, reporting non-compliance, and adhering to the applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations, accreditation and licensing requirements (if applicable), and CNHA’s policies and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Finance, Business, Economics, Statistics, Accounting or related field.
- CPA certification preferred.
- Ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in a senior level finance or accounting position with demonstrated leadership skills preferred.
- Five (5) years of experience leading major financial activities in a multi-faceted non-profit and/or multi-service setting.
- Five (5) years of supervisory experience that involved management of professional staff and responsibility for the development, management, execution and coordination of program policies and activities.
- Excellent interpersonal skills (negotiation, listening and communication skills) characterized by effective interactions with a diverse range of internal and external constituents, stakeholders and audiences.
- Demonstrated political savvy to operate in politically complex situations and remain effective.
- Ability to effectively work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
- Decisiveness, action-orientation, personal integrity, capability to persevere in difficult and ambiguous situations, and a focus on strategic leadership issues are highly desired.
- Models open, collaborative leadership style that promotes teamwork and partnership while achieving desired results.
- Ability to set & achieve goals, to self-motivate, and to work independently.
- Direct experience working with the Native Hawaiian community or on matters of social justice is preferred, but not required.
- Knowledge, understanding, and sensitivity to Native Hawaiian issues is preferred.
