About this Role The Policy Director at Sustainable Conservation is pivotal in leading efforts to influence policy creation or modification that aligns with the organization’s environmental goals. This role involves strategic positioning to affect state policy and integrate equity into all policy-related work. The Policy Director engages with various stakeholders, including state and regional agencies, and manages relationships with legislative bodies, community organizations, and NGOs. The role requires strategic thinking to advocate for Sustainable Conservation’s position in numerous policies, such as the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act and the Dairy General Order. The position is based in either San Francisco or Sacramento, with collaboration across Modesto, in a hybrid work setting. Responsibilities Provide guidance and leadership on policy and strategy issues at various government levels. Lead legislative and administrative policy initiatives in coordination with program leads. Serve as an advocate and spokesperson for policy positions within Sustainable Conservation’s initiatives. Integrate governmental policy and social equity perspectives into program deliberations. Develop and articulate overarching policy goals across all organizational programs. Establish and nurture relationships with legislative members, regulatory agencies, and community stakeholders. Attend leadership and program meetings, driving policy position development. Requirements At least 5‑10 years of experience in California’s policy efforts at multiple governmental levels. Demonstrated collaboration skills and aptitude for developing policy goals with teams. Strategic partnership abilities with stakeholders for common goal achievement. Knowledge of California’s Legislative and Budget processes and natural resource policies. Strong organizational, planning, and time management capabilities. Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion principles. Valid CA Driver’s License and willingness for frequent travel. Benefits Competitive compensation based on experience.
