Director, Regulatory Affairs - West Work Location: West (Remote) This position presents an opportunity to play a key role in a growth‑oriented business that is a global leader in the renewable energy industry. The role reports to the Vice President of Regulatory and Policy and involves monitoring existing and potential future energy market rules and regulatory developments, establishing and overseeing the implementation of strategies to influence desired energy regulations, and formulating and executing market strategies, policy, and advocacy at regional western energy organizations to advance the interests of Brookfield Renewable’s wholesale power marketing business and diversified renewable energy portfolio. The applicant will work in the Western U.S. and will be requested to join the management team in New York City periodically. Travel to meetings within regional organizations or state capitols in Western United States will also be required as part of the normal course of business. Responsibilities Monitor, report, and advocate regulatory strategies in relation to energy market rules and regulations in the Western U.S. (Western Electricity Coordinating Council or WECC) – with a particular focus on the energy and ancillary service markets operated by the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) and the Southwest Power Pool (SPP Markets+) and related regional resource adequacy and transmission planning and development rules. Monitor, report, and develop strategies to respond to regulatory developments that impact the efficiency and effectiveness of regional markets and open access transmission tariffs, including generator interconnection policies that arise at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), and other regional transmission service providers. Collaborate and support regional team members and other departments (Federal and State Policy, Trading, Origination, Legal, Compliance, Development, Operations, etc.) to advance the company’s business interests and needs in both wholesale and retail power markets throughout WECC. Promote Brookfield Renewable’s interests as they relate to the evolution of energy market rules and regulations. Advise Brookfield Renewable’s management on the impact of regulatory developments on the business. Influence energy policy and regulation developments through direct contacts, networking, and participation in industry organizations. Maintain relationships with other energy policy professionals within the NGO community, in government and ISOs. Assist with due diligence related to M&A activities and commercial transactions. Requirements Demonstrated strategic thinking and strong negotiation skills. Strong political acuity, as well as knowledge of power and environmental markets, specifically in the WECC. Ability to work with trade associations, coalitions, and outside consultants as well as an internal team of professionals. Experience working with regulators, stakeholders, and industry advocacy groups. Ability to resolve differences, build relationships and achieve targeted results. Experience in project / case management and working on project teams. Demonstrated skills in identifying and assessing business threats and opportunities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to manage external consultants and lobbyists. Highly self‑motivated with the ability to work independently. Qualifications 10 years of public policy and regulatory experience, including at least 5 years of WECC market and regulatory experience. Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Engineering, Business Administration, Political Science or related field; Master’s degree is preferred. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with advocacy and western regional governance. Relationship builder with extensive network with other energy regulatory, policy and environmental stakeholders in the Western United States. Willingness to travel, estimated between 30% and 50% depending on location.
