Position Overview

The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences is seeking applicants for a full-time clinical or clinician-scientist faculty position. The successful candidate will be responsible for patient care, research, and education, primarily in our new OSU multi-specialty medical office buildings and surgical suites in the metro Columbus area. Participation in coverage at Columbus, VA, is also required.

Department/Division Overview

The Ohio State University prides itself on being one of the largest universities in the country. The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences has been established for over 100 years.  Like the rapidly growing Columbus area, the Department is experiencing good growth.  We have over 40 faculty and a strong support staff.  The Havener Eye Institute has its primary location in the Eye and Ear Institute building near campus. We have newly constructed state-of-the-art facilities that include on-site outpatient surgical centers. We strive to provide the highest quality of care for our patients with the latest surgical equipment and instrumentation.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Division Director and/or Department Chair is responsible for determining the work assignments. Each faculty member is expected to perform the full range of responsibilities in the areas of teaching, research/scholarship, and service. Clinical services are a component of your faculty responsibility, with or without the presence of a trainee.

It is expected that the academic mission of the Department will be supported. In consultation with the Department Chair, there will be an opportunity to pursue research, quality improvement initiatives, curriculum development and education initiatives, or other activities consistent with the faculty assignment. Faculty candidates will be responsible for patient care, research, and education, primarily in our new OSU multi-specialty medical office buildings and surgical suites in the metro Columbus area. Participation in coverage at Columbus, VA, is also required.

Service commitments will include clinical service at the OSUWMC facilities and other clinical sites as assigned. Active participation in divisional, departmental, and college committee functions is expected. Participation in local, regional, or national professional organizations is also expected.

Requirements

Applicants must be board-eligible or board-certified in Ophthalmology by the time of appointment and be eligible for licensure in the State of Ohio. Qualified candidates must hold an MD or DO degree and have completed an approved residency program in Ophthalmology. Subspecialty training in a Reina fellowship is required. Academic rank and salary are commensurate with experience and academic credentials. Knowledge and proficiency in medical and surgical management area of subspecialty. Demonstrated interest in scholarship and discovery by evidence of basic and/or clinical applied research and publications. Commitment to resident, fellow, and medical student education is required.

Faculty Defined
Clinical faculty (regardless of rank) 
- Persons with titles of assistant professor-clinical, associate professor-clinical and professor-clinical. These faculty will have earned a doctor of medicine (MD), doctorate (PhD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field. Clinical faculty members are not eligible for tenure and are appointed for terms of three to five years. They may be reappointed to successive terms. Their principal career focus is the delivery of exemplary clinical care, and may include teaching, and/or research. ?

Tenure-Track faculty (regardless of rank) - Persons with the titles of assistant professor, associate professor, or professor who are eligible for tenure or who have obtained tenure. These faculty will have earned a doctorate (PhD), Doctor of Medicine (MD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study. Their primary career focus centers on research, service, and teaching. Tenure-track faculty with MD or MD/PhD degrees may also be involved in clinical care.?

Research Faculty (regardless of rank) - Persons with the titles of research assistant professor, research associate professor, or research professor. These faculty will have earned a doctorate (PhD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study. Research faculty members are not eligible for tenure and are appointed for terms of one to five years. Their principal career focus is research.?
