An experienced system-change leader, the managing director will work with a diverse range of partners across sectors to strengthen nonprofit networks that increase individual, family, and community well-being. This position will supervise the Foundation’s Baltimore-based portfolio directors, fostering collaboration and leveraging staff expertise in the Foundation’s focus areas of Housing, Health, Jobs, Education, and Aging.Overall ResponsibilitiesOversee the evolution of the Foundation’s Baltimore-area grantmaking strategy, ensuring community members are core to identifying opportunities and solutions, and leveraging local and national partnerships and resources that advance community priorities.Supervise five to six program staff with deep experience in Baltimore grantmaking and facilitate a strong team-based approach to regional grantmaking, building on existing expertise, lessons learned, and portfolio strategies in the Foundation’s focus areas.Build grantmaking budgets with portfolio leads, identifying opportunities to grow local and national nonprofit networks, partnerships, and innovations that can address poverty at a broad scale and support positive system change.Oversee due diligence to evaluate the feasibility of grant proposals; conduct in-person site visits; and review financial statements, capacity to achieve proposed objectives, and capital project grant budgets and forecasts when applicable.Proactively seek out emerging opportunities to strengthen regional initiatives, collaborations, and evaluations that align with the Foundation’s mission.Manage key relationships with grantees and partners in the Baltimore region and coordinate representation of the Foundation at professional meetings, events, and dedications of projects in the broader community, including on evenings and weekends.Together with the president and CEO and program staff, work with Baltimore leaders across sectors, convene stakeholders, and collaborate effectively with local elected officials and their teams.Partner with the Foundation’s Strategy, Evaluation, and Learning team to use community input, data, and qualitative research to develop and continuously improve strategies and initiatives.Contribute to improving overall Foundation systems for grant monitoring, evaluation, reporting, and learning with partners to increase positive impact in the region.Work with the Senior Leadership Team and Board of Directors on special projects as needed, partnering effectively across Foundation departments and offices.Work with the vice president of programs and other managing directors to advance a collaborative, inclusive, and mission-aligned team culture that values shared success and provides opportunities for team and individual learning and professional development.In collaboration with the Communications Team, produce high-quality strategic memos, presentations, and reports for community partners, peer funders and public-sector stakeholders, as well as internal decision-making by the Foundation’s senior leaders and board.Frequent travel required for site visits and meetings throughout the Greater Baltimore region, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., with periodic travel to other Foundation communities as requested.Skills and QualificationsExperience and Skills: Senior professional with 10+ years of management experience advancing poverty-alleviation strategies and system-change efforts within nonprofits, foundations or public agencies. Skilled collaborator and community facilitator with deep knowledge of Baltimore. Experience applying public health, social change, and community-based grantmaking frameworks a plus. Superior planning, budgeting and reporting skills, with the ability to execute within specific timelines and manage multiple projects simultaneously.Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Teams, Outlook and Zoom. Familiarity with database and project management tools preferred. Strong ability to develop presentations, reports and analyses that effectively communicate impact and strategic progress.Initiative and Collaboration: Demonstrated commitment to community-centered philanthropy and a humble, curious approach to creative problem‑solving. Ability to lead and collaborate effectively across teams, with flexibility and diplomacy to achieve shared goals. Proven ability to skillfully build partnerships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.Analysis and Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex ideas clearly to diverse audiences. Strong judgment, discretion and professionalism, with the capacity to represent the organization as an ambassador in various community and public settings.Values and Approach: Demonstrated alignment with the Foundation’s values and guiding principles: respect for the dignity of everyone, as well as care, collaboration, commitment, community and curiosity.
