Assistant County Counsel

The Position Under administrative direction, plans, organizes and directs daily operations within the County Counsel’s Office; serves as a member of both the County's and the department’s management team. As the assistant department director of the County Counsel’s Office, this position combines management duties, supervisory duties, and legal practice including litigation of highly complex and/or controversial administrative and civil matters which may have a substantial impact on the organization. The Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate will be an accomplished attorney who demonstrates the ability to represent clients with professionalism, creativity, and collaboration. This individual will bring a broad range of legal experience and the ability to provide thoughtful, practical advice to elected boards, commissions, and County departments. Key qualities include: Breadth of Experience: Proven background across diverse areas of law, including advising governing bodies in complex legal and policy matters. Client-Focused Approach: Strong interpersonal skills, a commitment to excellent client service, and a positive, solutions‑oriented attitude. Public Sector Insight: A clear understanding of the unique role of the County Counsel’s Office in providing legal guidance on matters of law, policy, and administration. Exceptional Skills: Effective communicator with strong analytical ability, sound judgment, and problem‑solving capacity. Integrity: Demonstrated adherence to the highest ethical standards and professional conduct. Education and/or Experience Progressively responsible experience in civil litigation with some supervisory experience which demonstrates possession of and competency in requisite knowledge and abilities. Incumbents are to maintain active membership in good standing with the California State Bar Association.
