Cleveland, United States Cleveland Clinic Foundation Full time

The Cleveland Clinics Lerner Research Institute currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Clinical Laboratory Animal Veterinarian to develop a career in an internationally recognized research institute. The successful applicant will join three laboratory animal veterinarians and over 50 management and support staff providing care in an AAALAC-accredited program for rodents, rabbits, ferrets, pigs, ruminants, zebrafish, frogs, and nonhuman primates in over 60,000 sq. ft. of laboratory animal facilities. The Cleveland Clinic is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit multispecialty academic medical center that integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education and is a qualified employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. This is a Cleveland Clinic professional staff position (equivalent to faculty), and the successful applicant will receive staff benefits, many opportunities for career growth and development, and ongoing professional mentorship.

As a Clinical Laboratory Animal Veterinarian, your responsibilities will be to:

  • Regularly observe all animals in assigned areas to determine health status, specifically to identify health concerns, conduct and/or order diagnostic testing for animals as necessary. Prescribe medications for animals and oversee treatment to ensure dosage accuracy and effectiveness and maintain accurate and up-to-date animal health records. Primary responsibility (80%) will be for laboratory mice. Secondary responsibilities (20%) include support for all other animal species at the Clinic.
  • Work closely with veterinary technicians to provide guidance and training in matters regarding animal health, including policies, regulations, procedures, protocols, and advise veterinary technicians on determining follow-up treatment or procedures for animals identified as having health concerns. Present training sessions on laboratory animal medicine and science for veterinary technicians, animal husbandry technicians, and research personnel.
  • Serve as a technical expert and consultant for researchers on matters regarding animal model selection and animal use; advise investigators on caring, conscientious and competent treatment of laboratory animals. Review animal care and use policies and protocols to ensure that animals are being treated humanely and in accordance with best experimental practices and relevant regulations and policies. Collaborate with investigators to determine project requirements, experimental protocols, safety measures for personnel, and appropriate treatment of animals.
  • Monitor, record, administer, and destroy controlled substances in accordance with Cleveland Clinic policies and Drug Enforcement Agency guidelines. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Cleveland Clinic policies on the ordering and management of prescription drugs and controlled substances and oversee the monitoring of expiration dates of drugs and other supplies; ensure that expired substances are not in use and destroyed per regulatory guidelines.
  • Monitor researcher compliance with IACUC protocols and policies and regulatory guidelines. Participate in animal facility inspections, identifying non-compliance and areas in need of improvement.
  • Assist with preventive medicine programs, sentinel monitoring of rodent colony health, quarantine, and rederivation of rodents into bio-secure barrier facilities. Develop protocols and oversee personnel performing cryopreservation, IVF, embryo transfer, and other laboratory procedures in support of conservation of genetically modified rodents and similar resources.
  • Share weekday after-hours, weekend, and holiday emergency on-call services equally with the other three animal program veterinarians.
