VP of Medical Services

Jewish Home (the “Organization” or “JH”) is an $80 million dollar, best-in-class organization, keenly focused on helping older adults lead healthy, vibrant lives in the Greater Rochester region. Jewish Home maintains a laser-like focus on identifying, developing, adopting, and refining best practices in medical and social care for older adults no matter their stage of independence. With a vibrant strategic plan focused upon sustainability, innovation, and growth, the Jewish Home continues to provide critical solutions for aging well in our community.Services Provided by Jewish HomeJewish Home qualifies as the community’s only designated Continuing Care Retirement Community, offering a full complement of services, from retirement communities (including independent living, assisted living and long-term care), to community-based services. Jewish Home’s independent living settings are offered at The Summit at Brighton, assisted living at Wolk Manor, assisted living for memory care residents at the Lodge at Wolk Manor, daytime respite care for individuals with dementia at Marian’s House (located off-campus), and 328 long-term licensed beds at the Green House Cottages and Farash Tower facilities- all located on the same beautiful campus. Jewish Home’s newest offerings include: (1) Personal Medicine of Rochester - a personalized primary care experience with a focus on individualized health plans and enhanced access to physicians; and (2) licensed home care services. In addition to long term residential care for older adults, Jewish Home’s Farash Tower offers state-of-the-art outpatient rehabilitation services, memory care services, companion care for individuals requiring in-home non-medical assistance (Living Well Companion Care), rehabilitation care for individuals who have traumatic brain injuries or neurologic impairments (Neurobehavioral Rehabilitation Program), an adult day health care program, hospice care, transitional care and a physician-led house calls program for those who are housebound. The organization has the largest post-acute program in the region with eighty-eight beds with a turnover of three to twelve new patients a day on average. While some senior services organizations are shrinking, JH is growing, as evidenced by the current on-campus construction of ninety new rental apartments and thirty-five large independent living apartments.Jewish Home employs approximately one thousand and experiences lower turnover than the industry standard. Physicians, advanced practice professionals, nurses, and non-clinical staff all benefit from a forward-thinking and supportive organizational structure where professional development skills are nurtured. Jewish Home’s professional staff report that the organization’s visionary leadership, strong reputation for quality services, and competitive benefits package are primary drivers of their decision to join and stay. Employees of Jewish Home are proud to consistently be recognized as a Great Place to Work certified organization. The Great Place to Work Institute is the global authority on high-trust high performance workplace cultures and publishes the annual Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For list.Does Jewish Home only provide services to Jewish clients and residents?Jewish Home exists to support anyone in need of their services in the Greater Rochester region, not just Jewish clients and residents. Approximately half of all clients and residents of JH are Jewish, with the other half representing a wide variety of other religions and affiliations. Inclusion is a foundational Jewish value, in addition to meaningful life, compassion, choice and dignity.Jewish Home FoundationThe Jewish Home Foundation is a separate but closely related entity, with an independent board of directors and its own staff. The Foundation’s mission is to enhance the quality of elder care for residents, patients and staff. The OpportunityThe Jewish Home is seeking a Chief Medical Officer (“CMO”) to lead the agency’s medical initiatives and carry forward its legacy of award-winning care. The winning candidate will serve as a member of the Organization’s senior leadership team and will report directly to the President/CEO. The CMO is responsible for the overall coordination of medical care and ensures the adequacy and appropriateness of medical services provided to residents, patients, and day service participants. The CMO ensures that attending physicians’ plans of care, orders and documentation of health status are appropriate and timely, and also directly manages a reasonable caseload of patients. The CMO schedules 24-hour medical coverage and on-call medical coverage. The CMO also provides clinical guidance to the JH management team on admissions, medical concerns or plans for other JH initiatives on request. The successful CMO candidate will:Be the medical leader of the region’s most respected senior services organizationAll facilities and services offered by Jewish Home enjoy a compelling reputation for quality as evidenced by Newsweek’s inclusion of Jewish Home on its 2025 list of the Best Nursing Homes in America: a distinction given to only 7% of nursing homes in the nation. Jewish Home is considered a provider of choice in the greater Rochester community, with demand-driven waiting lists for the spectrum of services offered therein.Enjoy the ability to practice medicine, have influence, AND maintain an enviable work-life balanceMedical professionals who join the Jewish Home all comment on the ability to focus on patient care instead of computer screens and a push for higher and higher patient loads. The Chief Medical Officer has the right and obligation to determine the appropriate level of care for residents and to team with other clinical providers and staff to execute. Fellow physicians, nurses and social workers will look to the CMO to assess when a resident requires a higher level of care, based on the CMO’s deep experience with elderly patients. Leaders at JH report the ability to achieve work-life balance even while maintaining a robust schedule of activities. With a manageable and contained call schedule, a defined census of patients, and a high-functioning team, the CMO of JH is able to fulfill professional and personal goalsHave the privilege and responsibility for representing Jewish Home in the communityRespect for the CMO becomes synonymous with respect for Jewish Home. The CMO is in frequent contact with referral sources and sets the tone for other JH clinical professionals who are also in contact with referral sources. The CMO is also sometimes called upon to use good medical judgement, persuasion, and negotiation skills to manage conflicts that arise between hospitals, insurance companies and the organization’s various departments.Have the opportunity to positively impact the organization’s capacity to help under-resourced community membersThe successful candidate will recognize the impact the clinical team has on driving revenue and optimizing margins by maintaining strong ties to referral sources and accurately accounting for the clinical work performed with each resident/patient interaction. As a non-profit, margin optimization means more individuals can be served who don’t have the means to pay fully for services performed. The CMO will also remain current on changes and proposed changes in Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements and support the leadership team’s ability to advocate for financial support for seniors in our region.Experience a wide variety of responsibilities and activities each dayThe CMO of Jewish Home operates in multiple domains, adding meaningful variety to the role. On any given day, the CMO might transition from creating a new policy in anticipation of changes in regulations/best care practices, to caring for a skilled nursing resident, to coaching a medical professional on best practices, to meeting a new post-acute patient in the rehabilitation unit. Being nimble is both a job requirement and a sought-after attribute to this unique role.Lead a high-functioning teamThe Chief Medical Officer will lead a team of twelve medical professionals, comprised at present of five physicians and seven advanced practice professionals. The medical team is charged with servicing the clinical needs of residents of the Jewish Home, the Cottages, and Jewish Home’s inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation programs. The CMO also provides strategic guidance and clinical oversight to the organization’s Personal Medicine of Rochester Practice and the Physicians House Calls Program. The exiting CMO of the Jewish Home describes the medical team as possessing high quality capabilities and a strong work ethic. The department is currently staffed at appropriate levels by a team of individuals who check in frequently to see how they can help each other. Team members report that they look forward to coming to work and they enjoy the work they are doing. They feel they have been well-supported and mentored in their roles and look forward to a continuation of those standards of support under the new leader.Virtually all members of the medical staff, nursing staff and the senior leadership team listed “a collaborative nature” as the top trait required for success in the CMO role. Candidates who derive authority from a job title versus earning authority by building trust will not be a good fit for this role. The successful candidate will recognize the value of collaborating with the nursing, social work and rehab teams who spend countless hours supporting the needs of residents and patients.Benefit from a very competitive compensation packageThe successful candidate with receive annual compensation ranging from $275,000 - $325,000, a generous benefits package, and the opportunity to participate in a variable compensation plan. In addition to the essential functions of the CMO as described in “The Opportunity” section, the successful candidate will:Be certified as a Doctor of allopathic (MD) or osteopathic medicine (DO) with a current license to practice medicine in New York State.Possess at least 10 years of experience as a board-certified physician in family medicine, internal medicine, or physical and rehabilitative medicine. Board certification in geriatric and/or palliative care is strongly preferred, as is acute care/post-acute care experience.Ideally have knowledge of the hospital systems, insurance providers and health care related non-profits in the upstate New York region.Be an experienced manager and mentor of qualified attending and consulting health professionals, including physicians, nurse practitioners and/or physician assistants, dentists, podiatrists, trained technologists, or others as needed for health care services at the Jewish Home.Habitually build an interest on the part of others to come join the Jewish Home team when out in the community.Assure compliance of the medical department with laws, by-laws and procedures and establish policies and procedures for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, infection control and employee health.Assure that policies and procedures guiding Advance Directives and JH Medical Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment (“MOLST”) are being implemented.Possess an inquisitive nature, patient demeanor and a natural inclination to provide the highest level of care to patients.Possess a reputation for mentoring and treating clinical and non-clinical staff with respect.IS THIS THE RIGHT CAREER MOVE FOR YOU?If you are fatigued with facing your computer screen instead of facing patients, following policies that don’t seem to be in the best interest of patients, and want to get back in touch with your original goal to “make a difference in the lives of patients,” then you should inquire about this role. If the timing of this opportunity isn’t ideal, you should still inquire about the role, as the most impactful career moves rarely come along at the ideal time.To learn more about the role, please contact Deb Rosen, Vice President of Retained Recruitment for Clarity Recruiting and Career Management, Inc. at debrosen@clarityracm.com or by phone at (585) 410-8648.
