We are seeking a tenure‑track Ethnic Studies (with an emphasis in Africana Studies) Assistant Professor to start in August 2026. The successful candidate will demonstrate discipline expertise, sensitivity to diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic backgrounds and abilities, and a strong commitment to social and racial justice. The role involves teaching introductory courses in Africana Studies & Comparative Ethnic Studies, developing new transferable courses, and contributing to the growth of the Ethnic Studies Area. Duties and Responsibilities Advance equitable student learning through dedicated, exemplary instruction in accordance with established course outlines. Participate in the assessment of student learning outcomes for courses and programs; develop and implement assessment processes. Collaborate in the development and revision of curriculum and in program review. Engage in department program improvement initiatives. Participate in department, division, and college committees. Engage in professional development activities, both departmental and college-wide. Maintain current knowledge in the subject matter area and effective teaching/learning strategies. Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics. Inform students of course requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance requirements. Prepare and grade class assignments and examinations and inform students of their academic progress. Maintain attendance, scholastic, and personnel records and submit them according to published deadlines. Post and hold sufficient and regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy. Participate in the college’s shared governance processes. Minimum Qualification – Education/Experience Understanding and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff, and faculty. The applicant must possess one of the following (earned degrees from an accredited institution): Master’s in African‑American/Black/Africana Studies or Latino Studies, La Raza Studies, Chicana/o Studies, Asian‑American Studies, or Native American/ American Indian Studies. Master’s in Ethnic Studies. Desirable Qualifications M.A. or Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies or related fields (Africana Studies, African American Studies, or Black Studies). Demonstrated teaching excellence in Africana Studies, African American Studies, or Black Studies, and Comparative Ethnic Studies. Experience working with students at the college level in an academic capacity and a commitment to help under‑prepared students with college‑level reading and writing. Demonstrated commitment to Africana Studies epistemologies, anti‑racist pedagogy, transdisciplinary methodologies, and social justice practices. Sensitivity to motivate and teach diverse community college students across ethnicity, gender, religion, citizenship status, sexual orientation, academic preparation, learning styles, and disabilities. Commitment to community engagement, equity, professional growth, and teaching innovation. Willingness to assume faculty responsibilities beyond the classroom in a shared governance environment.
