From designing resilient highways and iconic bridges to advancing transit, passenger and freight rail, aviation, federal transportation ports, and marine infrastructure, your work directly supports economic vitality, public safety, sustainability, and quality of life. Our multidisciplinary teams—including planners, engineers, architects, construction managers, environmental scientists, strategic communicators, economists, and consultants—solve complex mobility challenges with innovation, excellence, and a deep understanding of community needs. Primary Responsibilities The role involves growing HDR’s Global Community Transportation Strategy practice to keep communities top of mind for our clients and projects. You will partner with other business leaders, coordinate enterprise‑wide activities, expand existing services, deepen client visibility, and develop solutions that are responsive to community needs. Program Leadership Lead the Community Transportation Strategy practice, providing strategies, tools, and analyses for organizational policies, project‑level outcomes, community‑informed decision‑making, compliance, and community benefits and workforce development planning. Maintain a database of HDR resources, track market trends, and coordinate with other business groups on related initiatives. Develop annual strategic plans that report current trends, identify best practices, and address opportunities to strengthen the program. Project and Program Support Responsibilities Serve as a technical focal point for the transportation market sector, delivering community‑centered solutions and creating alliances. Collaborate with technical directors, regional directors, market sector directors, and client managers to fulfill long‑term growth goals while maintaining high‑quality deliverables. Provide technical support, quality oversight, best‑practice development, project leadership, and principal‑level program/project management. Marketing and Business Development Support all transportation market sector directors in developing community‑focused initiatives and advising strategic visions. Build internal and external client relationships to identify and pursue major pursuit opportunities. Assist in capture planning, pre‑proposal discussions, proposal preparation, and presentations and negotiations as appropriate. Technical Staff Development and Alignment Lead the development of an educational program to elevate practice across planning, outreach, design, environmental, and other business classes. Coordinate with technical leaders on staff interests, knowledge gaps, and mentorship opportunities. Develop internal presentations and webinars highlighting best practices and lessons learned. Work with leadership to identify staffing deficiencies and recruitment opportunities to retain staff interested in community‑focused work. Preferred Qualifications A Bachelor’s degree in urban, city, or regional planning, engineering, economics, marketing, communications, public relations, sustainability, or a related field. 15 years of practical experience in the architecture and engineering industry. Experience in developing and managing a wide range of client relationships and specific programs and/or project pursuits. Demonstrated industry leadership in associations and maintaining a visible profile in relevant markets. Proven experience recruiting and leading staff; strong mentoring history. Commitment to HDR values and participation in an employee‑owned culture. Understanding of HDR’s Business Classes, Cross Sectors, Market Sectors, and Business Groups. Understanding of HDR’s ID&E initiatives and corporate responsibility report process. Master’s degree in a related field preferred. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a professional, architecture, engineering, or closely related field. Minimum of 10 years of experience in a related field. Maintains a professional or engineering registration and has related technical experience. Experience in developing and managing diverse teams. Works cooperatively with business class directors, operations managers, technical directors, and marketing managers on business class efforts. Committed to quality, improvement, and HDR values.
