Science Laboratory Technician - Chemistry (Temporary) – Ohlone College Salary: $28.73 - $31.67 Hourly Job Type: Temporary Division: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Location: Fremont Campus Job Number: 202300169 Ideal Candidate Statement Under general supervision, the position supports science courses by setting up labs, preparing equipment and supplies, and ensuring all materials are functional. It also maintains all lab equipment, supply levels, and oversees the safe storage and disposal of hazardous waste. This is a temporary position limited to a maximum of 165 working days within a fiscal year. Duties and Responsibilities Prepare various solutions for laboratory activities. Assemble new equipment and install it in the appropriate laboratory. Prepare equipment and materials for biology, microbiology, chemistry, anatomy, biotechnology, physics, engineering, and physiology laboratory demonstrations and exercises. Prepare aqueous and non‑aqueous reagents. Prepare mammalian and bacterial cell cultures aseptically. Freeze specimens and materials for storage as appropriate. Dispense proper quantities of materials. Monitor use and cleanliness of lab equipment and materials to ensure student safety. Store hazardous waste materials, chemicals, and specimens. Arrange for proper disposal of bio‑hazardous waste and hazardous waste materials. Perform minor repairs, including necessary calibrations, on apparatuses and equipment. Enter data into records and reports such as hazardous waste reports, chemical inventories, logbooks, preparation sheets, and other documents related to laboratory operations. Contact vendors to resolve equipment issues and discrepancies. Conduct inventory of lab equipment, supplies, and materials to ensure adequate stock levels. Provide lead direction to unclassified staff by developing work schedules and assigning duties. Assist with budget support and monitor the local lab budget to maintain sufficient supplies for the academic year. Work with faculty to guide or recommend safe laboratory activities. Demonstrate sensitivity and respect for diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of students, faculty, staff, and community. Engage and support historically disproportionately impacted groups by addressing equity issues and improving culturally responsive practices. Perform related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge: Common laboratory equipment such as microscopes, Bunsen burners, scales, test tubes, beakers, and flasks. Common laboratory specimens and chemicals used across biology, microbiology, chemistry, anatomy, biotechnology, physics, engineering, and physiology. Proper procedures for handling and disposing of hazardous waste. Methods of storing chemicals and specimens. General office software and equipment. Skills: Operate and maintain common laboratory equipment and materials. Handle and dispose of hazardous waste safely. Store chemicals and specimens properly. Utilize general office software and equipment. Abilities: Maintain up‑to‑date safety methods for handling and storing hazardous materials. Ensure the safety and condition of laboratory materials. Perceive color in chemical solutions. Maintain the laboratory environment in a safe and orderly condition. Effectively maintain equipment in working order. Maintain records related to work performed and inventory. Show sensitivity and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds. Prioritize assignments and meet deadlines. Communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with district staff, students, and stakeholders. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree with coursework in science, chemistry, biology, physics, or a related field. Two years of laboratory experience. Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds in an equity‑minded context. Physical Demands This position requires standing and/or sitting for prolonged periods; occasional stooping, bending, kneeling, and twisting; occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling light and moderate amounts of weight; operating office equipment requiring fine motor skills; and the ability to communicate in written and verbal forms. Vision and hearing in normal ranges (with or without correction) are required to operate equipment and communicate. The position also requires safe handling of lab equipment and supplies in an environment with chemicals and hazardous substances.
