Job Overview
The Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive safety programs to minimize risk and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations with commercial electrical construction. The Safety Manager will focus on ensuring safe operations, fostering a proactive safety culture and ensuring all safety protocols are in accordance with Kentucky’s safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Safety Program Management
- Develop, implement, and manage safety policies, programs, and procedures tailored to Kentucky regulations and commercial electrical construction standards.
- Conduct regular workplace inspect related and assessments to identify hazards, specifically electrical and site-related, and implement corrective actions.
- Coordinate and lead safety meetings, training, and drills (e.g., emergency preparedness, first aid, fire drills).
- Ensure full compliance with OSHA, Kentucky Labor Cabinet regulations, and any other relevant local or state laws.
- Investigate and report accidents, injuries, and near misses, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
Training and Education
- Develop and deliver training programs focused on electrical hazards, lockout/tagout procedures, personal protective equipment (PPE) usage, and safe operating practices.
- Stay updated on industry trends and best practices related to safety standards and regulations.
- Maintain detailed records of all training, certifications, and compliance documentation as required by Kentucky regulations.
Regulatory Compliance
- Monitor and ensure adherence to federal, state, and local safety and environmental standards, with a particular focus on Kentucky requirements for electrical construction.
- Maintain comprehensive knowledge of OSHA, Kentucky Occupational Safety and Health (KY OSH), and other legislation.
- Manage OSHA record-keeping, including accurate maintenance of safety logs and incident reporting.
Accident Investigation and Reporting
- Conduct thorough investigations of workplace accidents, near misses, and violations, emphasizing root cause analysis and corrective measures.
- Prepare and submit reports to management and regulatory agencies as required.
- Track safety performance metrics (e.g., incident rates, injury reports) and develop strategies for continuous improvement.
Safety Culture Development
- Promote a culture of safety by engaging employees in safety initiatives and encouraging proactive safety behavior.
- Recognize and reward safe work practices and achievements to motivate employees.
- Serve as the point of contact for safety-related concerns, providing guidance and advice to employees and managers.
Emergency Response and Preparedness
- Develop and maintain emergency response plans and procedures for various emergency scenarios (fire, chemical spill, etc.).
- Ensure that emergency equipment (e.g., fire extinguishers, first aid kits, emergency exits) is properly maintained and readily available.
Continuous Improvement
- Analyze safety performance data and identify areas for improvement.
- Recommend and implement safety process improvements, new technologies, and initiatives that enhance workplace safety.
- Collaborate with other departments (e.g., HR, Operations, Facilities) to integrate safety goals into daily operations.
Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Construction Management, Environmental Health, or related field. Equivalent experience in safety management may be considered.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), or OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Certification. Kentucky-specific safety credentials are highly desired.
- Proven experience (3-5 years) in safety management, risk management, or a related field, preferably within an industrial, manufacturing, or construction setting.
- In-depth understanding of OSHA standards, Kentucky OSH regulations, NFPA 70E (Electrical Safety), and environmental standards applicable to construction.
- Ability to conduct risk assessments and safety audits.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and training skills.
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and safety management software.
Working Conditions
- May require occasional travel to other company locations or sites.
- Ability to lift or move safety equipment and supplies.
- May require extended hours or emergency response during off-hours in the event of accidents or safety issues.
Note: Candidates must have a comprehensive understanding of Kentucky’s labor and safety laws specific to commercial electrical construction and a proven track record of managing safety programs in similar environments.
