Position Summary

The Meteorologist functions as the meteorological consultant to the company, providing consulting services and operational weather forecasts to internal clients within the utility.

At the Senior level and above, active in the American Meteorological Society or other Professional Organizations. Attend meetings on a regular basis.  May deliver presentations and participate on board or committee

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.  Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.​

A reasonable salary range is:​

Bay Area Minimum: $​114,000

Bay Area Maximum: $​182,000

Responsibilities:

• Works with limited guidance on most assignments.
• Prepares study protocols and manages meteorological programs for internal utility clients including Customer Care, Electric Operations, Energy Supply, Regulatory Affairs, Safety and Shared Services, and Gas Operations.
• Designs and manages meteorological field programs for internal utility clients including Nuclear Power Generation, Hydro (weather modification), Energy Management, Electric Operations, and Customer Care Manages more complex projects with many work tasks and of increasing value (>$25,000)
• Participates in marketing meteorological services to internal clients.
• Qualifies as the EOF Meteorologist for the nuclear emergency response team.
• Provides a leadership role to the weather forecasting team during severe storm events.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• BA/BS Degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science or Physical Science or equivalent work experience
• 5 years of total relevant experience including one or more meteorology fields supporting gas and electric utilities such as nuclear power meteorology, alternate energy development – wind, solar, wave; meteorological measurement systems, climate analysis and statistics, dispersion meteorology, meteorological information technology, weather modification technology
• 3 years of weather forecasting experience

Desired Qualifications:

• MA/MS Degree in Meteorology or Atmospheric Science
• Certification from the American Meteorological Society (AMS) or National Weather Association (NWA) or other professional associations
• Advanced skills in meteorological applications specific to gas and electric utilities.
• Familiarity with Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) reporting requirements for nuclear power plants.
• Familiarity with Electric System Operations (ESO) utility work environment.
• Familiarity with energy markets, including load forecasting and power procurement.
• Knowledge of severe weather and emergency response support in situations that require fast action – storm room operations.
• Demonstrated knowledge of weather forecasting
• Advanced knowledge of meteorological concepts and climatology.
• Knowledge of project management concepts and practices.
• Leadership, communication and interpersonal skills.
• Broad knowledge of various software applications, computer and web programming as it applies to weather monitoring, forecasting and modeling.
