Job Summary The Director, Regulatory Science and Policy works closely with the Vice President, Science Policy and Government Affairs (and Chief Policy Officer) to implement a wide range of regulatory science and policy programs related to AACR’s mission. Activities are designed to strengthen dialogue between policymakers, cancer researchers, and advocates, educate policymakers, advance scientific opportunities, and overcome policy barriers that challenge cancer research and patient care. The role monitors and provides background and analysis on issues such as personalized medicine, innovative clinical trial designs, co‑development of novel drugs, regulatory science, and FDA user‑fee reauthorization. Responsibilities include developing AACR‑specific initiatives to increase appropriations for cancer research, preparing briefings for Congress, representing AACR to federal officials and advocacy groups, and managing a team of employees. Major Duties and Responsibilities Provide direction and support for AACR’s science and health policy activities and priorities, from advice and needs assessments to strategy implementation and successful completion. Proactively identify and conduct policy analysis and development in key science and regulatory science areas. Support committee and task force activities, coordinating meetings and providing background materials and draft reports. Collaborate with AACR staff, including the Chief Policy Officer, Director of Government Affairs and Health Policy, and others across D.C. offices. Monitor, analyze, and assess legislation as it pertains to priority science and regulatory science issues. Prepare issue briefs and contribute policy articles for AACR’s monthly policy newsletter and annual Cancer Progress Report. Help shape special sessions and briefings to educate Members of Congress and their staff about pending legislation and research issues. Keep abreast of AACR’s scientific programs and consider policy implications where appropriate. Develop and maintain strong working relationships with policy staff of other relevant organizations and coalitions. Collaborate with AACR program, communications, public relations, and patient advocacy teams. Attend and report on relevant scientific and policy meetings and conferences. Manage direct reports to achieve AACR’s science and health policy goals. Position Requirements PhD, M.D., or other doctoral degree in a science and/or regulatory science‑related field. Ten (10) years of relevant experience in science policy and/or regulatory science and policy‑related environments. Proven accomplishments in implementing complex policy projects. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Outstanding interpersonal skills and high degree of judgment and insight. A self‑starter with creativity, initiative, and problem‑solving abilities. Strong strategic thinker who can carry through initiatives and projects to completion. A demonstrated ability to analyze complex political and policy issues, build evidence‑based arguments, and bring conflicting points of view to consensus. Capability to negotiate and work with VIPs and all levels of management on complex policy matters. Ability to make rational decisions based on comprehensive consideration of facts and alternatives. Capacity to work independently toward approved goals while coordinating with AACR officials as needed. Ability to multi‑task, manage deadlines, and communicate progress to stakeholders.
