Job Summary: Under general supervision, installs, maintains, and repairs electrical power and service wiring, control panels, motors, and related electrical equipment; and do related work as required. The principal function of an employee in this class is to perform responsibilities in the installation, maintenance and repair of Airport electrical systems, diagnose faults and failures and accomplish needed repairs. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Chief Aviation Electrician.
Essential Job Functions:
- Installs and repairs airport electrical systems including power distribution, lighting, motor and process controls, and communication lines;
- Inspects, maintains, and repairs electrical lines and equipment in accordance with the National Electric Code;
- Performs the calibration of equipment and sensors using digital voltmeters, ammeters, and other electronic equipment;
- Wires buildings, installs and repairs electrical receptacles and breaker switches;
- Locates hot spots in facility electrical equipment using thermograph equipment;
- Reads blue prints and schematic drawings;
- Estimates material and equipment required for installation of electrical systems;
- Installs and maintains underground cable and runway lights;
- Maintains electrical circuits and equipment for automatic air conditioning and heating equipment;
- Estimates material and equipment required for installation of electrical systems.
- Executes preventative maintenance programs;
- Coordinates the work of private contractors;
- Maintains electrical repair shop and initiates supply action to obtain the appropriate test equipment, repair parts or replacements;
- Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
- Installs and programs programmable logic controllers;
- Enters information into Computer Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS);
- Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.
- Thorough knowledge of airport facility and runway electrical, electronic and telecommunications equipment;
- Thorough knowledge of conventional electrical theory, safety practices and procedures;
- Thorough knowledge of OSHA, NEC, and other federal, state and local codes and regulations;
- Thorough knowledge of commercial and airport lighting and electrical distribution systems and equipment;
- Ability to work safely with high voltage components;
- Ability to conduct electrical and electronic testing and diagnostic procedures;
- Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports;
- Ability to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks
- Graduation from a trade school with a diploma in electrical technology; and
- Considerable experience equivalent to journeyman level in electrical field; or
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.
- Possession of a valid Iowa driver's license.
- Journeyman Electrician Certification.
- Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to communicate effectively;
- Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to work with hazardous electrical and electronic equipment;
- Sufficient manual dexterity with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to perform complex testing and repair work;
- Successful post-employment physical and drug test;
- Successful background investigation to obtain unescorted airport identification/access privileges;
- Possession of a valid state of Iowa vehicle operator's license.
