Pay Information U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs provided pay range: $43.59/hr – $50.84/hr Summary The Tibor Rubin VA Medical Center is recruiting for one (1) Maintenance Supervisor in the Engineering Service. The primary purpose of the position is to serve as the Supervisor of the Plumbing Unit. The Supervisor is accountable for the quality and quantity of work performed and follows standard procedures to assure efficient and economical accomplishment of work. This role includes administrative duties in addition to technical supervision of the plumbing unit. Qualifications To qualify for this position applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Experience: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but applicants must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of the ability to perform the duties of this position. Evidence demonstrating the knowledge, skills, and ability required must be supported by detailed descriptions in the resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. The screen‑out element is evaluated first; those who meet the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating. Eligible applicants are then rated against the remaining job elements. Experience includes paid, unpaid, and volunteer experience relevant to the duties of the position. Applicants who demonstrate adequate experience and will be rated as eligible must clearly indicate the nature of duties, responsibilities, and hours worked for each position. Duties Lead a diverse workforce of pipefitters and plumbers performing installation, maintenance, and repair of hospital plumbing and steam systems. Manage administrative tasks such as computer/typing/filing and ensure compliance with plumbing codes and standards. Instruct, direct, train, plan activities, and administer personnel actions for subordinates. Review, update, and write Standard Operating Procedures and policies relevant to the pipefitting and plumbing unit. Conduct frequent and periodic inspections of all equipment, arranging for outside construction support as required. Inventory and secure all equipment and supplies in the unit, initiating new and replacement property requests with justification. Maintain adequate stocks of materials and equipment by inventorying and ordering supplies as necessary. Schedule and approve all annual leave to accommodate workloads. Assign task priorities verbally and in writing to subordinates, ensuring deadlines are met and maintaining suspense files of important dates/goals. Research and gather data on equipment and materials to prepare specifications, Statements of Work, and Independent Government Estimates for ordering supplies, equipment, and services. Administer performance evaluations for all employees under supervision, prepare performance plans, develop annual performance appraisals, and participate in employee selection and promotion or reassignment recommendations. Initiate disciplinary actions where appropriate and maintain good discipline. Interpret specifications, drawings, memos, catalogues, and operating manuals for subordinates. Follow up on delayed delivery of materials, equipment repair, defective supplies, or other conditions that may delay work or cause deadlines not to be met. Conduct studies of staffing requirements, work assignments, equipment needs, and unplanned leave usage. Maintain an after‑hours callback/response list of employees for irregular or emergency situations. Certify time and attendance reports. Carry out special assignments delegated and perform any other related duties that may be assigned. Hold a COR certification; if not already certified upon taking the position, must be certified within 120 days of employment. Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM. Physical Requirements: Exert moderate to arduous physical effort involving standing, bending, stooping, lifting (up to 25 lbs unassisted), crawling, and climbing ladders or scaffolding. Operate in confined spaces, crawl spaces, and other isolated areas; work in uncomfortable positions for extended periods; handle steam systems and compressed gases; exercise caution with mechanical and electrical equipment such as drill presses, lathes, acetylene torches, arc welders, hydraulic presses, milling machines, pipe threaders, and other shop equipment. Work may involve high humidity and temperatures for extended periods. Prerequisites Must hold a COR certification or be able to obtain it within 120 days of employment.
