Associate/Full Specialist - Forest Carbon MCECO - ESPM Ecosystem Sciences Division - Battles Lab Position title: Associate Specialist or SpecialistSalary range: $75,600-$154,200 (UC academic salary scales)Percent time: 50%Anticipated start: Fall/Winter 2025Position duration: One year with possibility of extension Position Overview The Forest Ecology Lab at the University of California, Berkeley, under Dr. John Battles, seeks a highly motivated Associate or Full Specialist to advance research on forest ecosystems, particularly carbon dynamics amid climate change. Position Description Key objectives include: Review and revise the forest ecosystem carbon accounting framework used by CalFire. Develop statistically sound analytics leveraging temporally intensified FIA data. Create analytical workflows using open-source statistical computing platforms. Provide reproducible analytics and thoroughly documented code. Primary duties include: Develop robust data analysis plans with appropriate statistical methods. Evaluate empirical results for management relevance at appropriate spatial and temporal scales. Interpret and communicate research insights in peer‑reviewed manuscripts, reports, and outreach materials. Build open‑science workflows shared among collaborators. Conduct all research following best practices in reproducible science. Communicate technical program details to fire scientists, resource managers, and forest ecologists. Contribute expertise to the environmental data science workgroup at UC Berkeley. Qualifications Basic qualifications (required at time of application): Bachelor's Degree or equivalent international degree. Additional qualifications (required at time of start): Bachelor’s degree or equivalent + 5 years of research experience, or Master's degree or equivalent + 3 years of research experience. Preferred qualifications: Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline (fire science, forestry, ecology, natural resource management, data science, statistics). Five or more years of experience in a relevant domain (forest biometry, forest science, natural resource assessment). Experience with open-source programming languages, preferably R. Proficiency with version control and code sharing (GitHub). Experience with national forest inventory databases (e.g., FIA) or other large forest data sets.
