Priority consideration will be given to applications received by 01/04/2026 DESCRIPTION Serves as a Human Resources Generalist for the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation organization. Applies professional human resources concepts, organizational policies and procedures, to provide guidance to supervisors, managers, staff and student assistants in resolving a variety of human resources issues of moderate scope and complexity. Interprets, evaluates and applies policies and procedures using effective independent judgment, and ensures compliance with policies, procedures and regulations. Attends all human resources briefings and disseminates relevant information. Acts as advisor and provides support to department heads and supervisors on HR matters involving recruitment, classification, compensation, benefit administration, employee development, compliance, separations, timekeeping, payroll and UCPath. Provides analysis regarding salary equity issues pertaining to new hires, reclassifications, equity requests and merit increases. Manages the process for staff classification including making recommendations or determinations for appropriate classification. Serves as resource for client group staff and students on a variety of topics. Counsels employees concerning work‑related issues and provides relevant information and resources. Acts as a liaison between management and other offices such as Human Resources, Path Center, Student Employment Office and the Office of Research Affairs for HR actions, issues and matters related to compliance and policy. Collaborates and coordinates with the HR Director and other members of the HR and Academic Personnel teams. Serves as backup to other team members. Takes initiative for and actively contributes to the development of VC‑wide HR policies, practices and process improvements. Participates in campus‑wide HR committees, workgroups, initiatives and process changes, as appropriate. Incumbent is responsible for an assigned client group from one or more of the following departments/areas: Organized Research Units (ORUs) ORU Core Services Office of Research Affairs Research Compliance & Integrity Office of Contracts and Grants Administration Office of Innovation and Commercialization Please submit a cover letter for a complete application. QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree in Business/Human Resources and/or equivalent experience or training. Demonstrated experience (typically 4 years) as an HR Generalist, or equivalent combination of related education and experience. Experience performing job analysis, creating job descriptions and making classification recommendations for job descriptions using existing compensation and classification structures. Experience administering leave of absences related to FMLA/CFRA/PDL. Knowledge of legal requirements, best practices and issues related to disability management, accommodation, and Worker's Compensation. Proven ability to evaluate, interpret, and implement policies and procedures relevant to payroll and employment, for represented and non‑represented employees. Knowledge and experience with wage and hour laws, and other laws and regulations relating to employment, compensation, collective bargaining, and FLSA. Demonstrated experience with payroll processes, such as timekeeping and leave auditing. Knowledgeable about best practices as it pertains to recruitment, employment and staffing. Knowledge of a human resources management system (HRMS), and/or other related business software programs and systems. Experience using applicant tracking systems. Experience working with online personnel and payroll systems. Strong analytical skills with proven ability to effectively advise others in multiple areas of HR. Proficient in communicating clearly and effectively verbally and in writing and in integrating information in the completion of assignments. Demonstrated ability to handle difficult or volatile situations / individuals effectively. Experience supporting multiple units simultaneously with employees in different classifications. Strong time management, organizational, and follow‑up skills to prioritize and complete tasks and projects within set timelines. Ability to work under pressure to meet tight deadlines and adapt to changing priorities. Ability to generate reports and statistical data, and report information in various formats. Self‑starter with proven ability to take initiative to resolve problems and improve policies and procedures. Must work well independently and as part of a team. Must have some experience with basic Employee Relations advising. Experience working in a union environment. Familiarity with collective bargaining agreements. PREFERRED: Knowledge of UCSD payroll and personnel online systems and resources, such as UCPath, Hireonline, and UCSD Job Description Library. SPECIAL CONDITIONS This position may be eligible for a Hybrid flexible work arrangement, which could include a non‑standard work schedule, and/or the ability to work off‑site part of the time. Pay Transparency Act Annual Full Pay Range: $65,800 - $115,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%) Hourly Equivalent: $31.51 - $55.08 Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
