The final class is dependent on the applicant’s qualifications. Responsibilities You will assist the Design Standards Engineer with directing significant department-wide projects related to traffic barriers, roadside safety, and design standards development for use on state improvement projects. You’ll be responsible for assisting in the creation, development, revision, monitoring, and interpretation of design standards for the preparation of plans and for the construction of highways and other transportation modes. Review and publish MnDOT’s manuals (Facility Design Guide, Standard Plans, and Standard Plates) and Technical Memoranda. Provide solutions to problems encountered by design, maintenance, and construction personnel within Mn/DOT, counties, cities, and consulting engineering companies. Conduct research activities, including literature searches on subjects related to highway design, assisting districts/division on monitoring performance of field experiments. Assist in evaluating the crashworthiness of barriers and other traffic control devices. MnDOT does not sponsor applicants for visas or Optional Practical Examination for STEM Students. Individuals must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. at the start of employment. Minimum Qualifications Engineer Senior: Employee must hold a license as a professional civil engineer with the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience and Interior Design (AELSLAGID) or be able to obtain licensure through reciprocity. (If obtaining licensure through Comity, a temporary permit from AELSLAGID must be provided to MnDOT HR prior to starting employment.) Experience preparing and reviewing construction plans, specifications, and estimates. Experience interpreting national roadside safety design policies. Experience drafting in MicroStation OpenRoads Designer and Adobe InDesign. Ability to communicate technical data to all audiences regarding complex design standards and other technical correspondences. Engineer 2 Graduate: All applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university and at least two years professional-level civil engineering experience in the areas noted below (a master’s degree may substitute for one year of professional experience). Applicants must have completed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam and obtain licensure within six years of hire date. Experience preparing and reviewing construction plans, specifications, and estimates. Experience interpreting national roadside safety design policies. Experience drafting in MicroStation OpenRoads Designer and Adobe InDesign.
