Under the leadership and direction of the Political Director, the Deputy Political Director handles the day‑to‑day operations of NYSUT’s political department. Specifically, this position works with the Political Director to manage the political action field operation for NYSUT’s electoral and issue‑based campaigns as well as overseeing the fundraising arm of the union, Vote/Cope. Further duties may include, but are not limited to, responsibility for departmental budgeting and administration. Primary Responsibilities Develop strategic political approaches related to issue advocacy and electoral advocacy. Support Regional Political Organizers’ efforts to mobilize rank-and-file support for federal, state, local, and school board elections. Support the work of the Political Action Coordinators and Vote Cope Coordinators. Analyze voter turnout trends, results and behaviors. Oversee field programs, including but not limited to voter registration efforts, member mobilization, voter contact and get‑out‑the‑vote activities. Oversee the development and execution of candidate trainings, NYSUT’s pipeline project and other special projects as assigned. Represent the Political Director at designated internal and external meetings, workshops, and/or conferences, as directed. Handle additional administrative functions of the Political Department, including assisting in annual budgeting and oversight of PAC members and Vote/Cope Coordinators. Support the Political Director in monitoring and managing certain NYSUT funds. Under the direction of the Political Director, oversee the online advocacy work done through NYSUT’s Member Action Center (MAC). Serve as administrator for voter databases such as VAN, Catalist and other statistical software and platforms such as Action Network, Hustle, etc. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications Background in political/issue based campaigns, electoral targeting, and political data. Superior communication (oral and written) skills; ability to prioritize, organize and communicate effectively. Working knowledge and experience in campaigns and elections from school board elections to presidential campaigns. Knowledge and experience of state laws governing such activities. Ability to promote teamwork and collaboration among departments within NYSUT and with coalition partners. College degree preferred with at least 8 years of political, organizing, data and polling experience. Willingness and ability to travel and work irregular hours, including occasional weekends if needed. NYSUT – Who are we?
