Director of Pharmacy at Bath Community Hospital Position Summary The Director of Pharmacy serves as the Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC) for the hospital pharmacy and as the inpatient pharmacist. The director provides executive oversight for both the hospital pharmacy and the retail pharmacy operations. The Director of Pharmacy is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the overall operations of the Pharmacy Department. This includes ensuring compliance with quality standards for patient care across all age groups, managing pharmaceutical purchasing and inventory, overseeing staff, and supporting organizational planning, budgeting, education, and performance improvement activities. Reports To: Chief Nursing Officer FLSA Status: Exempt Essential Duties & Responsibilities Serve as Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC) for the hospital pharmacy, ensuring compliance with all Virginia Board of Pharmacy regulations. Serve as the inpatient pharmacist. Provide leadership and operational oversight for both the hospital pharmacy and the retail pharmacy, ensuring alignment of staffing, policies, purchasing, regulatory compliance, and customer service standards across both pharmacy environments. Plan, organize, and direct pharmacy operations in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. Collaborate with nursing, medical staff, and clinical department leaders to support safe and effective pharmaceutical services. Monitor departmental activities and ensure efficient and effective operations. Direct and oversee all pharmaceutical purchasing, storage, and inventory management. Ensure proper distribution of medications throughout the hospital. Develop, implement, and update departmental policies, procedures, and standards. Lead human resources functions including recruitment, training, performance evaluation, and employee development. Oversee in-service education and staff competency programs. Participate in hospital committees (e.g., Pharmacy & Therapeutics, Safety, CQI). Provide pharmacist coverage as needed. Prepare and manage department operating and capital budgets. Maintain accurate department records and patient charge systems. Maintain and update hospital formulary and pharmaceutical information resources. Implement, monitor, and evaluate quality improvement initiatives. Utilize advanced mathematical and analytical skills for pharmacological calculations and data evaluation. Provide education and training to staff and community as needed. Ensure adherence to safety, infection prevention, and regulatory standards. Demonstrate flexibility and support other duties as assigned based on hospital needs. Education & Licensure Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy required. Graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy. Current Virginia Pharmacist licensure required. Has passed an immunization training program and is able to vaccinate. Experience Minimum of two (2) years managerial experience required. 340B program experience required. Experience providing pharmaceutical services across all age groups. Skills & Competencies Strong knowledge of medication therapy management and regulatory compliance. Ability to supervise pharmacy personnel and support professional development. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to read, interpret, and apply pharmaceutical literature. Proficiency with automated pharmacy systems and basic computer skills. Knowledge of HIPAA compliance standards. Strong problem‑solving, math, and critical‑thinking skills. Ability to adapt to changing priorities in a healthcare environment. Work Environment & Physical Requirements Frequent standing, walking, and occasional sitting. Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs occasionally. Manual dexterity and ability to perform precise tasks. Exposure to chemicals, medications, and clinical environments. Personal protective equipment use as required. Ability to hear alarms, communicate clearly, and visually inspect medications.
