Covers boilers, pipes, tanks, and refrigeration units with insulating materials, such as fiberglass, cord, plastic, and magnesia to reduce loss or absorption of heat, prevent moisture condensation, and to deaden sound.
Responsibilities
- Follow the rules of safe conduct at all times.
- Accurately interpret and apply information from work orders, job orders, specifications, blueprints, ISO's or other drawings and recognize basic blueprint terms and symbols for job application.
- Identify, recognize and demonstrate safe usage of hand tools and power tools appropriate for the job,
- Recognize various materials used in the craft and demonstrate a working knowledge of appropriate material handling techniques.
- Select and safely use appropriate equipment which may include (but not limited to) manlifts, fork lifts, and company trucks.
- Demonstrate knowledge of insulation specifications.
- Demonstrate the ability to layout, cut and fabricate sheet metal necessary for insulation systems including:
- Measure and cut sheets of insulation into sections demonstrating efficient use materials and safe use of tools.
- Demonstrate skills in installation of molded rubber and fiberglass materials to cover gas piping, refrigeration or air conditioning systems.
- Demonstrate ability to fabricate and install detachable insulation for valves (or similar fittings). Task will include measuring connections, preparing patterns, assembling and installation of fabricated covers.
- Trowel mastic or cement on cloth to obtain smooth finish.
- Insulate machinery by attaching wire netting over insulation, and trowel cement or other material to obtain a smooth finish.
- The employee should be able to compare and see differences in the size, shape, and form of lines, figures, and objects and work to set standards.
- Select insulating materials and tools bases on specifications.

- Demonstrate ability to use whole numbers, fractions and decimals to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
- Installation - Installing equipment, machines, wiring, or programs to meet specifications.

- Judgment and Decision Making - Considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.

- Demonstrate ability to effectively utilize materials/resources in cost-effective manner.
- The employee must possess a minimum reasoning ability usually associated with this type of work.
- Extent Flexibility - The ability to bend, stretch, twist, or reach with your body, arms, and/or legs.
- Multi-limb Coordination - The ability to coordinate two or more limbs (for example, two arms, two legs, or one leg and one arm) while sitting, standing, or lying down. It does not involve performing the activities while the whole body is in motion.
- Manual Dexterity - The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
- Trunk Strength - The ability to use your abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without 'giving out' or fatiguing.
- Gross Body Equilibrium - The ability to keep or regain your body balance or stay upright when in an unstable position.
- Arm-Hand Steadiness - The ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position.
- Must be able to pass pre-employment drug, background and fit tests.
