Senior Engineering Manager, Web Platform

San Francisco, United States ELCORA ENGINEERING SOLUTIONS PLLC Full time
Company Description

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together.

So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality through Afterpay, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.

Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.

Job Description

The Web organization delivers compelling experiences via browser to millions of businesses using Square today, and millions more considering it. Managing a business and selling online can be complex, and we’ve committed to tackling that complexity on behalf of our sellers, to give time back.

Delivering elegant, complex web experiences at scale demands world class enablement, and our Web Platform team supports hundreds of active Web developers in doing just that. A large-scale framework migration to React has just kicked off, and taken along with continuous integration and testing, modern design systems, build and deploy optimization, and architectural concerns there is massive potential for impact immediately ahead As the Engineering Manager on this team, you’ll lead several first-line teams and their managers in evolving our platform capabilities while coordinating feedback loops and adoption across the entire Web team.

You will:

  • Set broad direction for Square’s Web Platform teams
  • Cultivate an excellent organization by hiring remarkable talent, coaching your team, fostering principled and collaborative engineering decision-making, and applying your technical expertise to maintain a high bar
  • Oversee the success of your teams products, establish and achieve quantifiable results
  • Report into the Head of the Weband participate in essential technical, design, and product discussions with leaders across our product, engineering and operations teams
Qualifications

You Have:

  • BA/BS degree in computer science or equivalent industry experience (12+ years preferred)
  • 2+ years of experience managing first level engineering managers, each with teams of 6+ engineers
  • 10+ years of experience with JavaScript/TypeScript and modern web frameworks (specifically including ReactJS)
  • Extensive experience in web markup (HTML5, CSS3), backend technologies (NodeJS, Java), front-end build tools (Webpack, ESbuild, Vite) as well as micro front-end architecture
  • Proven record of successfully delivering large platform initiatives and/or features (spanning ~1+ year) from start to finish with strong collaboration, communication, and ownership
  • Experience collaborating with engineering leaders and cross-functional team members
