The Role We are seeking a collaborative and innovative Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) to provide strategic and operational leadership to Makom’s clinical nursing team. This role enhances health, health literacy, and wellness for people with IDD through culturally accessible and relevant supports, delivered within a multi-disciplinary, population health framework. The CNS plays a vital role as mentor, coach, and leader, working with nurses, clinicians, and community partners to ensure high-quality healthcare outcomes. Responsibilities Clinical Leadership & Oversight Provide leadership, support, and supervision for Makom’s nurses, ensuring top standards of care and compliance with Maryland and Virginia nursing regulations. Oversee clinical functions to promote preventive healthcare, evidence-based practices, and population health outcomes. Review and implement nursing and related policies, protocols, and best practices. Collaborate with internal and external providers (behavioral health, occupational therapy, dieticians, PT/OT, SLPs, etc.) to design and deliver optimal healthcare supports. Health Education & Training Develop and deliver engaging training programs for licensed and non-licensed staff. Teach or oversee courses including Medication Administration (MD & VA), CPR/First Aid, and VA Board of Nursing-approved 32-hour instruction. Coordinate training logistics, including tracking attendance, ensuring competency demonstrations, and registering trainees for state certifications. Construct training with interactive activities, practice opportunities, and assessments requiring 80%+ to pass. Program Development & Innovation Contribute to the development of clinical innovations and outcome measures using benchmarking and data-driven approaches. Engage in community-based participatory and translational research to advance health education and outcomes. Implement surveys and assessments to evaluate quality and effectiveness of health supports. Participate in planning new opportunities aligned with Makom’s mission, vision, and organizational growth. Collaboration & Communication Partner with individuals supported, staff, and departments to create meaningful health education experiences. Participate in team meetings and cross-departmental activities. Provide timely updates on workforce and talent management needs, including recruitment, performance evaluation, and mentoring of nursing staff. Additional Responsibilities Participate in medical and nursing student elective rotation programs. Address emergencies and provide responsive clinical support as needed. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Master’s degree in nursing as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (Clinical Nurse Specialist). Compact Registered Nurse licensure. Experience in a Health Care Center, Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), or primary care practice. Exceptional knowledge of value-based nursing care, particularly in IDD and disability-related health improvements. Strong collaboration skills across clinical and non-clinical teams in a 24/7 environment. Critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving abilities. Strong computer skills: experience with SharePoint and Paycom preferred. Valid MD, VA, or DC driver’s license. Successful completion of drug screenings, background checks, and reference checks.
