Nurse Extern II

The Student Nurse Extern II (SNE II) may perform acts that are routinely of any nursing assistant job description. SNE II may also perform additional acts that have been taught in their nursing education program provided they are individually educationally prepared and clinically competent to perform these acts.
It is incumbent upon the DOE or designate to independently verify and document competencies of the student to successfully perform the acts that are included in the SNE Job Description.
Under the supervision of an RN, assists in assuring optimal patient care, while continuing as a Nursing Student in good standing.
Performs clinical skills according to hospital policy and procedures.Performs technical skill according to policy and procedure.Maintains hospital and patient confidentiality.Demonstrates concern for patient welfare by performing activities other than primary care needsApplies knowledge of age-related factors appropriately to patients, utilizing appropriate policies and procedures.Responds promptly to patient requests by answering call lights, greeting patients in a cheerful positive manner, answering question or fulfilling needs and alerting Registered Nurse as necessary.Tidies rooms, makes and changes bed linens and ensure rooms are clean, neat and orderly. Assists with stocking items in rooms. Sets up oxygen flow meter, humidifier and nasal cannula as requested.Performs courier duties to the lab and other hospital departments to deliver lab specimens (Urine, stool, sputum), or deliver and retrieval of other requested items.Transports patients to and from various areas as needed.Answers phones and greets patients and visitors. Performs other related duties as assigned that will facilitate achievement of quality patient care.Takes and records vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse and respiration), measure and records intake and output, and weighs patient as assigned. Observes patient's physical appearance, attitude, response to medications and treatments, appetite, etc and reports observations to Registered Nurse.Performs or assists with routine procedures such as enemas, sitz baths, surgical preps, turning patients and explains procedures to patient to facilitate understanding and reduce anxiety. Gives bedpans, urinals or assists patient to commode or bathroom.Assists patient with meals by preparing patient's proper positioning, moving tray, and feeding patient as necessary. Ensures nourishments and water are given to patient in accordance with established schedule of as requested.Helps patients in and out of bed and/or wheelchair. Performs back rubs, converses with patient in a positive friendly manger in order to reduce anxiety and encourage communications.Participates in various in-service and staff activities to contribute to the on-going development of knowledge and to improve techniques.Performs age specific patient assessment demonstrating awareness of growth and development for each age group. Demonstrates knowledge of age specific assessment, recognizing psychosocial levels and developmental patterns. Provides for age-appropriate stimulation and learning needs.Adheres to Hospital's Standards of PerformanceA graduate nurse can remain in the Extern Program until after an unsuccessful 2nd attempt at NCLEXAdheres to Arizona State Board of Nursing RegulationsOther duties as assigned by management.Every effort has been made to make this job description as complete as possible. Minimum EducationCurrent student in final year of an Associate Degree Nursing Program or completion of 3 years of a Baccalaureate Program.Candidates must be in good standing with the accredited school of nursing.
Required SkillsCertifications:BLS from American Heart Associations required on hire. If BLS is not with AHA, new hire will have 30 days to obtain it. (If ACLS is current, BLS is not required).
Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action
