Psychiatrist - Metropolitan Detention Center

Psychiatrist - Metropolitan Detention Center University of New Mexico, Department of Psychiatry is seeking a full‑time staff physician to serve as a Metropolitan Detention Center Site Psychiatrist. The psychiatrist will provide on‑site psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for inmates referred by medical or clinical services staff, and will produce written summaries of history, diagnosis and treatment course. The staff psychiatrist reports directly to the site Psychiatric Director. Minimum Job Requirements Graduate of an accredited medical school and completion of an appropriate psychiatric residency. Fully licensed to practice medicine in the state of employment. Current DEA registration. Preferably board‑certified or board‑eligible in psychiatry with administrative experience in corrections medicine. Subject to initial and ongoing security clearance requirement. Duties and Responsibilities Provide on‑site psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for inmates referred by medical or clinical services staff, and produce written summaries in accordance with national standards and the McClendon Agreement. Provide psychiatric services for inpatients, including assessment, diagnosis, staff treatment planning, and regular review of all inmates assigned. Provide psychiatric services for inmates referred to the Healthcare Unit and for those in the general population requiring regular psychiatric/mental‑health follow‑up. Provide services for inmates who need to be transferred to mental‑health facilities, including work‑up and court hearing testimony. Act as the regular psychiatrist and participate in treatment programming and planning for the Mental Health Unit. Maintain regular staffing and contact with Mental Health Unit staff and supervisor, discuss problem cases, follow‑up and monitor medication, and provide general psychiatric input. Provide medication management to all inmates admitted to the Mental Health Unit and individual and/or group therapy as appropriate. Approve all admissions and discharges into the Mental Health Unit, sign and monitor implementation and efficiency of treatment plans. Provide in‑service education to Mental Health Unit staff as needed. Be available on a scheduled basis for on‑call needs of the Mental Health Unit. Participate in the Treatment Audit Committee. Attend meetings as directed by jail administration. Physical Requirements Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Ability to kneel, stoop, crouch, and/or crawl occasionally; frequent walking throughout the site, including up and down flights of stairs. Maintain sufficient strength, agility, and endurance to perform during stressful physical, mental and emotional situations encountered on the job.
