JOB DESCRIPTION:


As an Associate Attorney working on Guardian ad Litem (GAL) cases, the day is usually a mix of advocacy and collaboration. GAL provides legal representation for children and youth in delinquency and dependency & neglect cases. You’ll spend time meeting with children, families, and professionals involved in the child’s welfare to gather information to represent the child’s best interests in court. Court appearances, drafting reports, and attending hearings will be regular parts of your week, with a focus on the comfort and understanding of child and youth clients. This will include explaining difficult legal situations in age-appropriate language and is sometimes as simple as providing a fidget toy to soothe anxiety in the courtroom or getting them a snack during a long day of proceedings.

The day-to-day responsibilities of a Criminal Defense Attorney encompass legal advocacy, client communication, investigation, case preparation, legal research, and ongoing education. You will play a pivotal role in upholding justice and safeguarding the rights of those facing criminal charges. You will prepare motions, attend hearings, conduct legal research, review discovery, and advise your clients.


OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: 


·      Attorneys are expected to prepare and conduct all aspects of assigned cases at the trial court level.  

·      Maintaining professionalism and kindness to clients and potential new clients.

·      Exhibiting independent thinking/problem solving skills.

·      The candidate will be required to be consistent, reliable, and should be personable to help establish an appropriate rapport with clients and their families. 


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


Experience, Education, and Licensure 

●       J.D. from an accredited law school

●       Licensed to practice law in Colorado

●       Member in good standing of the Colorado State Bar.  

●       No history of disciplinary action by any state bar licensing authority.  


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

·      Ability to speak and advocate in courtroom proceedings

·      Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.  

·      Ability to make good decisions, maintain confidentiality, establish effective working relationships, and thoroughly document work.  

·      Strong dedication to representing children and youth.  

·      Ability to work with modern workplace technology and devices such as computer and phone devices.

·      Proficient in Word, Excel, and email services.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

·      Dropbox, Ring Central, GSuites, hard drives, MyCase, etc.  

·      Experience in GAL (or criminal defense) casework, as attorney, legal intern, or similar.


WORKING CONDITIONS: 

Hybrid Environment. Majority of duties can be done remotely; we do have a physical office location if that better suits your needs. However, court appearances and client visits are typically in-person. This position routinely handles emergency or crisis situations and may be frequently subject to interruptions, multiple calls and inquiries. Must be located in Colorado Springs, CO or able to travel there when needed. At times, may be asked to travel to surrounding counties. Must have reliable transportation when needed.


COMPENSATION: 

$80,000/yr - $95,000/yr depending on qualifications plus bonus structure applicable to private criminal defense cases. Benefits include PTO program and sick leave, retirement plan option with matching.
