UPMC Harrisburg is hiring a full-time Specimen Processor for their day shift team. This role organizes patient specimens collected by the phlebotomy team, prepares specimens for analysis or send-out to outside labs, and enters specimen information into the hospital database.
This is an excellent position to explore or begin a long-term career in the laboratory setting Hours for this role are Monday-Friday, 6:00 AM-2:30 PM and every third weekend. Members of the Specimen Processor team are also placed on a rotation to cover at least 2 holidays each year.
Purpose: Efficiently handle, process, and distribute all laboratory specimens. Manage data entry, report generation, and clerical tasks. Train new staff and provide customer service.
Responsibilities:
- Uphold a service-oriented attitude, offering proactive support in departmental operations.
- Ensure prompt specimen processing from delivery systems and resolve any discrepancies.
- Perform centrifugation, aliquot labeling, and sample storage following established protocols.
- Accurately record specimen receipt times and respond to inquiries regarding specimen handling and test results.
- Comply with health and safety regulations for biohazardous materials and sharp objects.
- Confirm specimen and paperwork accuracy, input data into the Laboratory Information System, and manage external specimen shipments.
- Organize and prioritize specimens, communicate issues to the supervisor, and maintain cleanliness and disinfection of the workspace.
- Assist in training new laboratory specimen processors and execute routine technical and clerical duties as needed.
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- Three to six months of experience in a clinical laboratory, physician's office, or other medical environment preferred, including knowledge of or experience in Medical Terminology and Laboratory Information systems.
- Three to six months of experience in a service environment including call center, customer service center, or product distribution/fulfillment center preferred.
- Good oral and written communication skills required.
- Ability to communicate effectively with all age groups and populations of external and internal customers (as well as co-workers) both by telephone and in person.
