We have an excellent opportunity for an experienced histologist with supervisory experience to join our team. This position will work as a functioning histologist, alongside the other staff histologists, in addition to the supervisory duties. The lead should be able to provide technical expertise in the area of histology and immunohistochemistry. Experience with Roche, Leica, and Sakura products are a plus. Experience with Microsoft Office, especially Excel, and CoPath information system are also a plus.

MD Pathology is a full service anatomic pathology laboratory that has been providing pathology and laboratory medicine services to the Dallas/ Fort Worth area since 1990. Our staff is comprised of 10 board certified and subspecialty fellowship trained pathologists with expertise in surgical pathology, cytopathology, gastro-intestinal pathology, breast pathology, and hematopathology.

*DUTIES: *

Under the general direction of the Medical Director and the Operations Manager, assists in all aspects of histology and immunohistochemistry (IHC) whereas histology and IHC will henceforth be referred to as just histology. The Supervisor will work as a functioning histologist and be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties.

*TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:*

· Process, embed, cut, stain and coverslip

· Check and log temperatures of laboratory equipment

· Empty, clean, refill Cytology stains

· Empty, clean, refill H&E Linear stainer

· Empty, clean, refill Tissue Tek machine and paraffin

· File paraffin blocks and slides

· Record data on worksheets

· Inventory and order laboratory supplies as needed

· Print and/or label slides

· Log special stains and cytology cases

· Perform routine and special stains

· Prepare acid and ammonia solutions

· Pull accompanying reports and deliver slides to he Pathologist

· Receive, date, and stock supplies

· Timely preparation and updating of procedures and policies pertaining to Histology

· Coordinate schedules and communicate with other histotechnologists

· Check and log temperatures of applicable laboratory equipment

· Perform proper instrument maintenance procedures as indicated by the manufacturer, as well as performing troubleshooting measures

· Perform quality control measures and maintains record in accordance with manufacturer’s directions. Correct deficiencies and document all corrective actions

· Maintain proper documentation including accession logs, test control logs, equipment records, and checklists

· Notify physician of any test that cannot be completed within the requested timeframe, or because of other circumstances

*LEAD TECH RESPONSIBILITIES:*

· Be accessible to the laboratory to provide on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation

· Responsible for day-to-day supervision or oversight of histology personnel performing histology technical responsibilities in the absence of the supervisor

· Responsible for the resolution of technical problems in accordance with policies and procedures established by the laboratory director or technical supervisor

· Evaluate histology staff as needed

· Ensure adequate histology staff coverage

· Monitor employee hours worked to minimize overtime.

· Complete the monthly histology schedule.

· Oversee inventory and ensure orders are prepared and submitted on a timely basis. Review packing slips for accuracy

· Identify and recommend new technologies in laboratory in order to improve quality, cost effectiveness, and/or efficiency

· Assess equipment needs with supervisor. Ensure that all equipment is adequately maintained, and necessary repairs are made on a timely basis. Train staff in proper use of equipment

· Ensure supplies, equipment, and human resources are used properly and economically

· Facilitate communications so operational issues are addressed on a timely basis. Inform histology laboratory staff of policy changes

· Provide in-service training. Identify areas of conflict or concern to supervisor and suggest resolutions

· Assist in preparations for CAP inspections and participates in self-inspections during the year between official inspections

· Be responsible for ensuring the histology lab is free of deficiencies on CAP checklists; prepare responses to deficiencies from on-site inspections for review by supervisor

· Attend the QA, Supervisor, and other meeting as requested, in the absence of the supervisor.

· Implement and monitor compliance with practice policy and procedures for the histology lab

· Review and update policies and procedures, in NCCLS format, pertaining to histology. All procedures must be updated as soon as feasible, but at least annually. For new tests and protocols, a written procedure (approved by supervisor) must be completed prior to initiating patient testing

· Review all histology room staff work on a periodic basis; correct and train staff persons

· Monitor consistent errors for cause, resolve issues

· Perform employee orientation for all new histology staff

· Responsible for new employee training

· Ensure all safety and regulatory plans are maintained in the histology laboratory

*PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:*

Histology laboratory environment. Work may be stressful at times. Must be able to stand for long periods of time. Must be able to stoop, bend, and stretch. Occasional heavy lifting required, up to 50 pounds. Exposure to potentially infectious agents. Frequent hand washing required. Vision and hearing must be correctable to within normal range.

*SKILLS REQUIRED:*

Organizational skills and supervisory abilities are necessary. Knowledge of histology and cytology laboratory procedures, standards and tests to perform quality control checks, and evaluate staff performance; knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to perform troubleshooting of instrumentation. Knowledge of supervisory principals to oversee the work of other laboratory staff. Knowledge of safety requirements to provide instructions and to recognize and correct hazardous conditions. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with office and medical staff and public. Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions. Ability to follow written protocols. Ability to work independently. Ability to communicate clearly.

*MINIMUM LEVEL OF PREPARATION AND TRAINING REQUIRED FOR THE JOB: *
Must be a registered Histotechnician with ASCP certification with at least five years of experience in a histology lab; at least one year in a supervisory capacity preferred. Fast paced environment with possible frequent interruptions. Must be flexible to cover other shifts, weekends and holidays. Visual acuity needed to read and identify specimen samples.
