Summary:

The Investment Data, Analytics & Research (“IDAR”) division of the Treasury, Risk, Investment Operations, Analytics and Data department (“TRIAD”) is responsible for a variety of investment-oriented responsibilities, including investment performance and attribution, benchmarks, valuation oversight, matrix pricing of private securities and commercial mortgages, ad hoc statistical analyses, building quantitative models, and “Whole Portfolio View” (“WPV”) investment reporting. 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Cross-training on various regular processes for which IDAR is the accountable business partner with an eye toward eventually assuming lead responsibility for one or more of them.  Examples of possible processes include WPV investment performance measurement and attribution; matrix pricing; valuation oversight; and benchmark administration.

  • Assists more senior Associates or Directors in conducting statistical analyses as needed, often using advanced math.

  • Under direct supervision, assists more senior Associates or Directors by applying technical expertise to complete complex portfolio, asset class, or industry studies used to support the investment function. 

  • Beginning to develop an understanding of the WPV invested asset critical data elements and how they are used by investment and risk personnel.

  • Assist in developing complex models to capture investment exposures, risk characteristics, and pertinent investment activity by gathering data and aggregating investment activities across departments.

  • Gathering WPV data in support of required regulatory submissions or presentations to committees, rating agencies, the Board of Trustees, or senior management.

  • Producing and disseminating reports focused on investments, investment risk management, and investment analytics, such as the weekly Duration Report or the monthly Risk Report.

  • Assisting in documenting and updating/maintaining existing documentation for IDAR-led processes.

  • Working with Corporate Solutions and others in TRIAD to review and evaluate data and technology refinements in support of IDAR-led processes or WPV reporting.

  • Assisting in responding to inquiries and solving complex challenges from TRIAD or investment front-office personnel concerning investment data, exposures, or analytics by applying technical know-how.

  • Assisting in the development of tools that will allow IDAR personnel to gather investment exposure data more efficiently and with “drill-down” or “look through” capabilities.

  • Serving as secondary business support on various technology-oriented initiatives aimed at improving the quality or accessibility of the Company’s WPV invested asset data.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Undergraduate degree in finance, investments, economics, quantitative analysis, or a related field.

  • Sound understanding of investments, especially as it relates to using investment data for decision-making.

  • Ability to build upon understanding and knowledge of finance, economic, and market fundamentals in day-to-day work.

  • Attention to detail, persistence, and a willingness/ability to dig into new, challenging, and complex processes.

  • Intellectual curiosity, willingness to learn, and willingness to challenge the status quo and find better ways of doing things.

  • Strong controls mindset and ability to refine and streamline processes.

  • At least 1-3 years’ experience in asset management, portfolio management, risk management, performance measurement, investment operations, or investment data and research.

  • Strong drive for results, strong work ethic and developing problem-solving skills.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in data manipulation using Excel and business intelligence tools such as PowerBI.

  • Good communications skills and ability to prepare analyses, written summaries, and presentations.

  • Experience in working with large databases and/or large datasets and capable of writing SQL queries.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Graduate degree (e.g., MBA or JD) and/or relevant certifications ( e.g., CFA charter) preferred.

  • Familiarity with investment-oriented platforms or systems, such as Bloomberg AIM, Aladdin, or FactSet.

Pay Range - Start:

$75,180.00

Pay Range - End:

$139,620.00

Northwestern Mutual pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement in the salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. At Northwestern Mutual, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. Positions in certain locations (such as California) may provide an increase on the standard pay structure based on the location.
