Department Overview Building Operations is a large division within the Facilities Management (FM) Department. Building Operations provides the campus community, including two medical centers and other off‑site locations with the best, most optimal working and learning environment through well maintained buildings and uninterrupted utilities. The annual budget for FM’s Building Operations is $20 Million with $40 Million for utility expenses. Position Description Under supervision, serve as work leader for the electric shop, to modify, repair, maintain, install, and overhaul internal and external electrical and lighting systems, equipment and components utilized in campus buildings, facilities, on grounds, walkways and streets. Oversee and instruct others to inspect and test lighting systems and determine needed repairs. Coordinate services with campus customers and assist with questions regarding work performed. Respond to on‑the‑spot customer complaints as necessary and report matters to supervisor for follow‑up. Maintain all associated time and material records. Provide expeditious, professional and courteous customer service. Qualifications Journey level knowledge and skill in the electrical trade, including complex lighting and construction methods. Skill in reading, interpreting and understanding blueprints (building, lighting and equipment) diagrams and other technical information to perform needed adjustments and repairs. Ability to read and interpret national electrical code and IEEE code books. Ability to document electrical changes and or new installations through written information and/or prints. Solid experience working in a service‑oriented environment and developing customer relationships through proactive service skills. Strong problem‑solving skills and sound judgment; ability to follow through and carry out assignments. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, self‑motivation, adaptability, tactfulness and decisiveness. Ability to work with co‑workers to accomplish work with a high level of quality and efficiency. Proven journey level skill in maintenance and repair procedures including preventive maintenance, breakdown, repair and troubleshooting, construction, installation and fabrication techniques typical to the trade; ability to perform mathematical computations of trade. Experience in the proper use and maintenance of hand and power tools related to job functions. Solid knowledge of building codes, rules and regulations as well as ability to understand UC San Diego’s policies, procedures and maintenance goals and programs. Physical ability to perform all job functions and duties; ability to move through limited access spaces; must have access to transportation to drive to various campus locations. Experienced use of standard computer systems and applications including Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe, CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System), electronic mail and web based applications. Ability to prioritize the workload of others with minimal supervision, and plan work effectively in the field with customers and without direct supervision. Understanding of stages of team development and group dynamics. Ability to enhance team performance through active participation and encouraging involvement. Ability to employ team decision making tools such as brainstorming, consensus building, multivoting, flowcharting, force field analysis & cause‑and‑effect diagramming. Solid understanding of continuous improvement concepts and methods. Proficiency in the use of hand tools and precision measuring devices. Ability to work in or around morgues, gross anatomy and pathological laboratories where human and animal bodies or parts thereof may be exposed to view of the worker. Special Conditions Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results. Required to hold valid driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program. DMV check and clearance required prior to hire. Must be physically able to perform all essential functions. May be required to work overtime as operationally necessary. Ability to work in or around morgues, gross anatomy and pathological laboratories where human and animal bodies or parts thereof may be exposed to view of the worker. Must possess and maintain a State of California Certified General Electrician Card provided by the Department of Industrial Relations. Preferred. Pay Transparency Act Annual Full Pay Range: $113,796 - $113,796 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%) Hourly Equivalent: $54.50 - $54.50 Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
