Department Overview The Intercollegiate Athletics Department consists of more than 300 staff members and coaches, sponsors 30 varsity sports programs, and serves over 850 student‑athletes annually. The Athletics CFO reports to the Vice‑Chancellor for Finance (VCF‑CFO) and the Co‑Athletic Directors. Position Overview The Athletics CFO provides financial leadership to Intercollegiate Athletics, oversees departmental functions, and serves as the C‑suite liaison to campus partners. The role develops multi‑year financial sustainability plans, manages all budget resources, and coordinates closely with the VCF‑CFO, Athletics Cabinet, co‑athletic directors, and other senior managers. Responsibilities Financial Leadership: Lead development and oversight of Athletics’ financial sustainability plan and multi‑year outlook, including creation of executive and detailed reports for the global Athletics budget, sport‑specific budgets, fundraising tracking, and forecasting. Maintain integrity of budget, forecast, reporting, and tracking systems through supervision of budget and fiscal staff; act as chief budget liaison for resource allocations and in‑year budget management of all funds. Strategic & Executive Advising & Partnership: Perform analysis for organization‑wide funding issues, budget processes, resource allocations, and funding models; create ad‑hoc analyses to track gifts and capital projects. Engage senior management on strategic matters, develop and deliver presentations and budget material, and communicate with coaches, admin personnel, and staff. Functional Management: Manage the Business and Finance unit including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Financial Data Analytics, Procurement, Budgeting, Reporting, Forecasting, and Planning. Develop, modify, and execute internal controls to protect university resources. Required Qualifications A thorough understanding of financial modeling and the ability to create and maintain complex financial models. Working knowledge of accounting principles, including profit and loss statements and balance sheets. Public finance knowledge; strong analytical, budgeting, reporting, and fund‑accounting skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to articulate complex concepts at multiple levels. Interpersonal and collaborative skills; ability to work effectively across the organization and manage diverse stakeholder needs. Proven track record of managing staff and leading units to achieve measurable goals. Client‑services orientation; strong listening, critical thinking, and analytical abilities. Ability to multitask and prioritize autonomously. Ability to evaluate processes to establish accountability structures and internal controls. Advanced skills with relevant office and accounting software. Undergraduate degree in a related field. Knowledge of NCAA rules and other relevant standards; maintain compliance and avoid violations. Preferred Qualifications Public finance experience, preferably in higher education and/or NCAA athletics. Advanced degree or equivalent experience/training. Expertise in accounting and financial management at a similar level of complexity. Advanced knowledge of intercollegiate athletics functions and compliance needs. Experience or knowledge of sports media and/or revenue. Salary & Benefits Salary range: $215,000 – $265,000. Full salary range for the job classification: $138,200 – $271,200.
