Senior Electrical Design Engineer
Vice President, Systems Design at Safe Flight About the Position: Our senior electrical engineers develop the safety-critical circuitry required in modern avionics, and they also architect how the parts of a system go together to meet the aircraft's functional and safety requirements. Our projects fuse electronic, software, and mechanical features. Senior electrical engineers work hand-in-hand with customers to make sure the product being developed is the right one. When Safe Flight Engineering feels the best way to solve a problem is in the field, engineers are hands‑on to instrument simulators and aircraft. This includes utilizing our experimental aircraft for testing and demonstration. Our senior electrical engineers are leaders of lifecycle of avionics development. Products are initiated in conversations with customers or internally by identifying unmet aviation needs. Safe Flight engineers are responsible for research, design, and testing. Our production and repair facilities are on site, and we stress communication between the Engineering and production teams. Every aspect of our products are influenced by engineering. Our technologies are a heritage of robust, analog computing integrated with today's digital logic and signal processing. Above all, we are expected to design carefully and analytically, considering what happens in the presence of failures. "We've always done it this way" is never sufficient, and each application has unique challenges and technologies. We don't expect candidates to have memorized specific designs, but we seek electrical engineers that enjoy breaking a problem down to first principles, drafting a solution, fabricating an implementation, and testing it in the lab. Our lab space has electronics rework stations and a walk‑in EMC chamber. We also have a vibration table, temperature chambers, and other qualification test equipment to understand the performance of the design in its environment. About Us: Safe Flight, a leader in aviation safety and flight performance systems, was founded in 1946. The company pioneered the development of Stall Warning and Angle of Attack, Automatic Throttle Systems, Wind Shear Warning, and many other innovations in aircraft instrumentation, flight performance, and control systems for fixed and rotary winged aircraft. With product installed on over two‑thirds of the world’s aircraft, Safe Flight counts among its customers the majority of the world’s aircraft manufacturers, more than 50 airlines, hundreds of operators of corporate jet aircraft and U.S. and International Armed Services. Safe Flight’s benefits: include employer-funded health care, on‑site lunch program, 401K contribution, Wellness and Education Reimbursement, paid‑time off and sick time, and various other programs. Job Details: Onsite Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Salary Range: $115-$140K, commensurate with experience. Responsibilities: Architect and design electronic circuits for aviation computers, test equipment, and harnesses. Evaluate design choices to ensure compliance with product functional requirements, environmental compatibility, and manufacturing lifecycle. Generate comprehensive reports and documentation supporting design decisions. Develop statements of work for contracted services, such as board layout, and effectively manage contractors throughout project execution. Create detailed test procedures and reports for electronic hardware, ensuring product reliability and performance. Offer engineering insight to Program Management and Sales and Marketing teams for new business proposals and customer support activities. Provide support to manufacturing and repair departments, particularly for legacy products. Performs other related duties as assigned. Required Skills and Abilities: Expertise in digital design operating in the hundreds of MHz range, utilizing ARM Cortex or similar‑scale microcontrollers. Proficiency in analog computer design and circuit analysis. Experience designing for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and environmental qualification standards such as RTCA DO-160G, MIL‑STD‑810H, MIL‑STD‑704F, and MIL‑STD‑461G.
