Base Pay Range $92,000.00/yr - $197,000.00/yr Description Liberty Mutual has an immediate opening for an Environmental Complex Claims Specialist—a role ideal for claims professionals with significant experience handling complex environmental/pollution matters and/or mass litigation/toxic tort claims. The Environmental Complex Claims Specialist will manage a book of Commercial Specialty Lines Claims throughout the entire claim lifecycle, conducting investigations, recommending reserves, monitoring, documenting, and settling/closing claims expeditiously and economically within prescribed authority limits for the line of business. Preferred candidate will live within a 50‑mile radius of one of the listed Hub Offices (Westborough, MA; Boston, MA; Suwanee, GA; Plano, TX; Hoffman Estates, IL; Indianapolis, IN; Lake Oswego, OR; Las Vegas, NV; Chandler, AZ; or Weatogue, CT) and will be able to come into the office twice a month. Remote candidates may be considered if they do not live within 50 miles of one of these offices. Responsibilities Analyze, investigate, and evaluate the loss to determine coverage and claim disposition. Utilize CMS to document claims and to track future events or follow‑up. Within prescribed settlement authority, establish appropriate reserves for both indemnity and expense, and review regularly to ensure adequacy. Make recommendations to set reserves at the appropriate level for claims outside of authority. Prepare comprehensive reports and identify and communicate specific claim trends and account or policy issues to management and underwriting. Manage the litigation process through retention of counsel. Adhere to line of business litigation guidelines, including budget, bill review, and payment. Proactively manage the case resolution process. Actively participate in mediations and arbitrations within settlement authority limits; participate in the claims audit process. Provide claims marketing services by meeting with brokers, risk managers, and reinsurers as necessary. Maintain insurance adjuster licenses as required. Travel Up to 25%. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and/or advanced degree; J.D. preferred. 7+ years claims/legal experience, with at least 2 years within a technical specialty preferred. Advanced knowledge of claims handling concepts, practices, and techniques, including coverage issues and product line knowledge. Functional knowledge of law and insurance regulations in various jurisdictions. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Advanced analytical, decision‑making, and negotiation skills. Experience in Environmental Claims and/or Pollution Claims. Experience with mass litigation and/or toxic tort required.
