General Statement of Duties

Enhances the educational process by modifying or removing health related barriers to learning and by promoting an optimal level of wellness. Provides leadership and supervision to school nurses and administrative staff in matters pertaining to school health for all students in the facility for assigned caseload of schools.

Essential Duties

  • Serves as the first line of contact for building principals and health services staff at assigned schools
  • Provides ongoing management, guidance, oversight and evaluation of school health services staff
  • Coordinates the school's health services program for assigned schools; follows procedures, protocols, and other instructions provided by the Assistant Director of School Health Services or contained in division manuals and protocols
  • Assesses the health needs of students by observation, screening programs, and referral procedures and provides intervention as needed
  • Conducts clinical observations to ensure practices and protocols are implemented with fidelity
  • Completes annual evaluations for school nurses in assigned caseload
  • Ensures completion of daily clinic records and prepares other required reports
  • Serves as a resource for the school's child study team
  • Interprets health status and/or medical findings to the student, his family, and school personnel as necessary
  • Presents and trains staff and maintains appropriate OSHA standards within the school setting.
  • Trains staff on additional health issues as needed
  • Demonstrates appropriate use of written and verbal communication
  • Demonstrates knowledge of child growth and development
  • Serves as a child advocate
  • Identifies and reports suspected child abuse or neglect to the building principal
  • Provides consultation and referral to students' primary medical care providers for evaluation with treatment and follow-up, if necessary, for suspected health problems
  • Participates in district immunization events and Skills Days
  • Reports compliance with state laws requiring immunization and exclusion of students with contagious diseases
  • Improves school nursing and school health through research and continuing education.
  • Attends school, community, and professional meetings as requested
  • Participates in the interview and selection process of agency nurses and the RN float pool
  • Provides training to RNs, LPNs and clinic aides
  • Maintains professional license
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Regular attendance is required

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to use clinic/medical equipment, basic pharmacology knowledge, and the knowledge and use of standard precautions, good oral and written communication skills and experience in conflict resolutions and problem solving required.

Current license to practice as a registered professional nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia, current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), a minimum of three years experience as a school nurse or other nursing experience with school-age children and adolescents, and a valid driver's license are required. Bachelor's degree in nursing or a related field is required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds frequently and 25 to 50 pounds occasionally, and may assist, move, or restrain students when required to intervene in student safety issues. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, lift, walk, stand, and hear.

Additional Information

The minimum salary for this 10-month / 209-day position is $61,392.78. Annual salary will be prorated based upon actual work begin date.
