Overview From an externship experience at an NVA hospital, students gain valuable hands‑on clinical experience while learning the day‑to‑day operations of veterinary practice. Every NVA hospital provides a supportive environment that is committed to excellent medicine and offers exceptional service to animals and their owners. Responsibilities Students work closely with a supervising Associate Veterinarian to develop clinical skills, including gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, conducting diagnostics, providing dentistry services, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and managing patients medically. Students also practise communication with the medical team, support staff, and clients. Eligibility and Requirements Externship slots are limited and most rotations at Soldotna Animal Hospital range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. Students with an interest in practicing in Alaska after graduation receive top priority consideration. A final‑year veterinary student must hold a veterinary student permit before beginning an externship in Alaska, in accordance with 12 AAC 68.500 and 08.98.188. Veterinary students pursuing the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Instructions for obtaining the permit can be found HERE; stipend details are listed HERE. Benefits and Stipend The stipend covers travel and living expenses for eligible students. In addition, NVA offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, a 401(k) with employer match, and paid time off (including sick time) for all eligible employees. For positions based in Colorado, NVA provides eligible employees with paid sick and safe leave and public health emergency leave following Colorado’s Healthy Families and Workplaces Act.
